we've taken over the state party, fund raising has fallen by double digits. also, iowa republicans have a really specific problem named diane. who not that long ago was the single most prolific fund-raiser for iowan republicans. she raised more for iowa republicans than anybody in the state, wu she is pro-choice and explained to the associated press that the social conservative takeover of the iowa republican party has been a little alienated. can mainstream republicans get somebody like her back? can mainstream republicans regain their strength and take back control from the groups that have taken over? can they get themselves back into power? magic 8 ball, can they? magic 8 ball says, look, this is bad. ted cruz. this is not going to help. tonight's big annual fund raising dinner for the republican party of iowa featuring the tea party senator, ted cruz. this is not going to help. ted cruz is not famous for it, but he is a rick santorum style social conservative and he always has been. >> it is known to us when he was in washington during the bush years, he worked for

and facebook just down the road in altoona are of -- are investing in growing in iowa because of her disability within state government -- because of the predict ability within state government. our goal has been to grow by 25%. that means these are not just jobs, but good paying jobs that lead to long-term careers. and many of those jobs are in stem, science, technology, engineering, and math careers. and we know that stem-related careers are projected to grow times -- four times faster than non-stem related careers. and just last week, it was announced that they were bringing 700 jobs to ames, tripling their workforce. when these jobs again with an annual salary of $50,000 up to $75,000 a year. [applause] that will make a difference. governor branstad and i are proud of the success that we've had, but we will not step back and look at the past. we will continue to lay the groundwork and we are focused on the future of iowa. iowa is a bright spot in this nation and we have a great story to tell. and with a leader like governor branstad, i was future continues to look bright -- iowa's

the gentleman from iowa. mr. latham: mr. speaker, i reserve my time at this point. the speaker pro tempore: the gentleman from iowa is reserving. mr. pastor: mr. speaker, it's interesting that we have talked about bringing our employees back from the shutdown. we were told by the chairman of the appropriations that this is very important because here we are dealing with safety and the reality is that probably the majority of air traffic controllers and safety personnel as required by f.a.a.le is working -- f.a.a. is working. i can't imagine that the add martor -- administrator would put the american public in any kind of taker. -- danger. again f. we would have had a budget conference several months ago, we could have done the appropriation process and probably funded the entire government using regular order. but i keep hearing that if this vote was to come to the floor, that it would pass in a unanimous -- not unanimous but it would pass in a bipartisan manner. so, mr. speaker, i ask unanimous consent to take h.j.res. 59 fr

already, because the iowa caucuses,urse, are first in the nation. that said, iowa screwed up its caucuses this past time, at least they did on the republican side. part of it was that the republicans never said with any confidence this past year who actually won their caucuses, so that was bad. now, though, there are gory new details emerging about the other much bigger problem that they have in iowa. and that problem, apparently, is bribery. republican politicians paying off iowa politicians for endorsements in the caucuses. the state senate ethics committee filed a 500 page report yesterday which found probable cause that an iowa state senator accepted payment from a michele bachmann pac for being her iowa chair. though that is against ethics rules. though the senator denied the bachmann camp paid him. not only did the bachmann camp apparently pay him, apparently they did not pay him enough. because just before the caucuses after taking off that money from michele bachmann and endorsing her, the same state senator cha

so he's really focusing on the activist crowd here in iowa. and that's the group that's really excited about him at this point. and it's interesting, actually, not everyone who we're used to seeing in the iowa gop is going to be attending the dinner tonight. it's because the party here is dealing with a really intense split. many supporters of ron paul have sort of taken over the state party. and there are a lot of more moderate republicans who are really concerned about the direction that that's going. and that could impact 2016 in so much as a lot of these moderates are starting to say hey, we have to change this. we have to do something about this infrastructure. and that could potentially hurt rand paul and benefit somebody like cruz or the moderates hope somebody like chris christie that they view as somebody who could potentially have broader appeal in a general election. and if they were to win in iowa, make the state more relevant than maybe it's been in past years. >> well, it's very interesting what's going on in iowa. we see it in vi

about the same time we are instituting a project in the state of iowa called the healthiest state initiative. iowahealthieststate.com. we started looking at how we make iowa held here and government isn't the answer. i work for governor terry branstad, a governor who never, ever is going to go for a ban. not happening. iowa is the purpose of the states but that isn't going to happen. and so what we had to look at his how do we engage i wins in their communities and neighborhoods, businesses? what we did this work with our largest grocer throughout iowa, the public universities and the associations and we started seeing one of the ways we can approach the population through two ways, number one would be blousons' and the other would be the healthiest state initiative and healthiest state walks. let me tell you why that's important though. iowa -- when we came in and like i said i look at problems and an annoying way. we new health care reform was on the horizon. governor branstad -- what we had to do this kind of like bob and at health risk assessment we had to get an idea of the state. so we

what the activists of iowa like is somebody who, you know, stands on principles. does what they say they're going to do. and particularly in the washington context where republicans have time and time again heard people they thought were conservatives say i'm going to washington and i'll give them what for, i'm going to stand on principle and even if it requires fighting my own party i will do it. and when push comes to shove they witness. ted cruz didn't wilt and i've heard people who are ted cruz fans now but as you know the iowa caucus voter and the tea party voter in the republican party is still a minority of the party. but given the way the process works, they have an outside influence on the primaries and caucuses. and so if this continues, ted cruz should have an interesting role to play although they'll bump up against a lot of the problems that rick santorum had which is you can fill a ball room of very enthusiastic people but you got to show how you can lead. and right now ted cruz is only increasing the number of people in washington who don't like him

it's looking a little like january right now in the great state of iowa. us a sense if you can, set the scene. where is senator cruz going to be this weekend? which other well-known republicans will join him. >> hey, peter, we are having a little cold snap in iowa. cruz is starting here in des moines where he'll be speaking at the reagan fundraising dinner, an annual event. heading for a pheasant hunt with congressman stephen king, the right wing congressman whose district is out in the more conservative part of the state, a critical area for conservative republicans to court. cruz is the republican of the moment out here in iowa, gracing the front page of the des moines register today. i actually spoke with king at some length about where he stands. he pointed out there are three things he's had to do, king had to do to keep him independent of the party which is where cruz is heading. independent funding, independent media profile not dependent on establishment figure and staying popular at home. those three things are what cruz is building on here. he do
