iowa city since mid- july. the mumps is highly contagious and is spread through contaminated saliva... so the university of iowa is trying to put an end to it. students packingthe iowa memorial union for their free vaccination earlier today. students getting the shot will be the third round of the measles-mumps- rubella vaccination. (sot. cg: lisa james/university of iowa nurse) "it's our hope that the more students that get vaccinated with this third one slow this outbreak." nurses say the students actually had to get the first two rounds of the m-m-r vaccine to be enrolled in the discussion for a new career and technical education center is underway. it's a 47 million dollar bond issue referendum -- and signatures are being collected to present to the board. waterloo schools superintendent dr. jane lindaman says the career and technical education center will be built near central middle school -- and will benefit the whole community. des moines is the only current location for a school like this. she says schools that have this type of programming have a 92 percent graduation rate. right now, waterloo has 70 to 75 percent graduation rate -- and lindaman says they can do better.

the league of united latin american citizens of iowa or lulac is hosting a caucus training session at iowa state. it starts at 1-30 this afternoon in the university's memorial union. the organization has launched a campaign to recruit and train ten thousand iowa latinos to turn out on caucus night. the sessions will teach latinos how caucuses work, the differences between the republican and democratic caucuses, and how to participate. and community members want to highlight the issue of food access at the february caucus. bread for the world and the catholic diocese of des moines are hosting the "vote to end hunger" rally at grand view university at two this afternoon. state faith and government leaders will talk about what hunger in iowa looks like. organizers say their goal is for participants to learn how to engage presidential candidates to make hunger a priority issue. metro waste authority says it has collected over 28-thousand tons of recyclables this past year. to celebrate the achievement and the upcoming america recycles day, the group is launching the recycling selfie challenge. iowans are encouraged to post photos of their green efforts on facebook, i
