new developments about that massive data breach at the irs. is a new report showing the number of effected taxpayers could be three times bigger than they first thought. ktvu fox 2 alex savidge is joining us live now. you're in oakland this morning with how personal data may have been stolen. good morning, alex. >> reporter: yes, dave, good morning to you. these identity thieves here they were targeting taxpayers that used one particular irs website. it's a site that has since been shut down but they were using the site to steal people's personal information which would have been used to claim fraudulent tax refunds. the irs this morning says there are roughly 334,000 victims of this scheme. originally the agency reported about 114,000 people had their information accessed. that was back in may. the stolen data was taken from the irs's get transcript website where people can access tax fillings from previous years. and with this computer breach now thought to be even more wide spread, the irs is planning to mail warning letters to an additional

we are getting a first look at a long-awaited senate report on the irs targeting scandal. correspondent doug mcelway is going through the documents right now. hi doug. >> reporter: good evening, bret. today's bipartisan report is the culmination of two years by the senate finance committee, some of it delayed because the irs claimed to have lost thousands of lois lerner e-mails. the report is broken down into three reports, combined findings and separate majority and minority staff views which are dramatically different. among the combined findings u the irs screened more than 500 organizations resulting in delays up to five years. but many top level managers were unaware of it until two years later in 2012. though they were sent important case reports as early as 2010 by lower level staffers top managers never read them. some key employees worked from home as often as four days a week with managers supervising employees from 2000 miles away. some managers in the exempt office which lerner headed were not trained in the very areas they managed including one who completed no

a new review by the irs has identified about 334,000 americans possibly affected by a cyber hack uncovered this past may. the cyber crooks gained access to personal tax information through the agencies online application called get transcript that allows you to look up past returns. the system was shut down after the attacks in may. they believe the hacks started in february. it wasn't just names that were stolen. dates of birth and social security numbers were also swiped. and the all-important personal information you fill in on tax forms,ing salaries, places of employment, where you live, married or not, with or without kids. information that makes it easier for someone to steal your identity. this report is the latest in a slew of cyber attacks targeting private businesses and federal agencies. at the government's cyber security center, workers are confronting the problem. >> when they see something that shouldn't be there, trying to get in that we know shouldn't be there, one of those squares light up, a human will call them and work through what it may or may not be. >> reporter: as
