gunmen have entered the jakarta theater. police have secured the area. this is an ongoing operation. at least seven people killed. four of them being a the tackers. also grenade was thrown at a police station as i said a police officer is among the dead. there have been explosions, gunfire all taking place and security forces are obviously involved in the ongoing operation, the area has been cordoned off. there are many buildings that are on lockdown. there is no indication of who is behind this attack. andreas is the indonesian consultant for human rights watch and joins us live via skype from jakarta. please forgive me i haven't talked to my producer, are you anywhere near where this is happening? >> i was about three-kilometer as way when it happened, i was driving. later i drive not to the location because it was blockaded by the police, but to the nearest intersection to location. >> what is your reaction to this -- to what is happening right now? >> i was listen to the radio, i listen today the radio [ inaudible ] and i see that the street of jakar

the business district here in jakarta. he motorcycle bikes they were carrying long rifles and started shooting. one of them shot directly at a police officer at a small police post at the i want since here at thamrin street. further they started shooting around. they were shooting at bystanders, but also there has been explosions, six explosions, witnesses have calculated them all coming one minute after the other. and there was a starbucks cafe where all the windows were blown out. it's not clear at this stage where the explosives were. but witnesses are also saying that there is a lot of nails on the street there. so that shows that there was explosives being used with nails inside. so the police any stage is now still chasing two attackers. four of them have already been shot at during a gun fight that the police had just shortly after the explosion i have went off. so the death toll is still now seven. so there are three civilians and four attackers. there is also several wounded. and there is a couple of foreigners als

it is something that we haven't really seen in the capital of jakarta before. it has happened in other parts of indonesia. certainly not targeting western interests but things like churches and we haven't seen any large scale terror violence in the capital for the past six years or so. there has been so much said about the number of indonesias and also people from neighboring countries like malaysia who may have gone off to iraq and syria to fight with i.s.i.l., and what will happen when some of these people will drift back to these countries like indonesia. it is a game changer, it will be difficult for the indonesian security forces to combat these small groups where there is one crackdown on one group, other groups disappear for the time being. a very difficult task. over the last few years we have seen the anti terrorist police in indonesia do a very good job at clearing up some of those terrorists >>> unself says it has - enicef says there are bad starvation issues in syria. ban ki-moon has called it a war crime. more from the u.n. headquarters in new york.

the jakarta stock exchange fell more than 1% on the news. a day of drama across asia as markets returned to the new year tumble. chinese stocks are headed to a bear market. japanese equities think the most since september. the yen is the best performer in fx markets this year. territory, nowe trading at its biggest discount to west texas in a year. crude is under pressure from growing stockpiles and iran's expected return to the market. let's get more on the markets. here is juliet. juliet: a very tough day for investors. let's have a look at the jakarta composite, which is continuing to fall, down over 1% on reports of explosions in jakarta, but we have been watching the chinese market and the market in hong kong. we have seen the shanghai composite now trade at levels we haven't seen since august 2006's closing level. the market is down 20% from december highs. we will see the shanghai composite back into bear market territory. in hong kong, things are not much better. only two stocks higher, down 1.6%. the nikkei in japan is down by over

ipdn police is searching for the man the main suspect in the jakarta attacks. a man linked to i.s.i.l. is syria is the chief coordinator behind the blasts. at least two civilians and five attackers were killed. police have arrested three men suspected to be linked to the attacks. indonesia has been targeted in the past and security had already been tightened following recent threats from i.s.i.l. it has been raised to an alert one status, the highest. the day after the bombing there is a semblance of normalacy. a peace rally is planned in the coming hours. more on the reaction this morning a day after those attacks in jakarta and tell us about these arrests that have been made. >> reporter: yes. it's still filtering out. we had an idea that, obviously, the authorities were going to be arresting people as soon as they had some sort of information and intelligence as to who might be behind these attacks. they made some arrests on thursday. it was still very grey as to how many arrests have been made, but apparently three people have been detained for questioning.
