"the new york times" was not national at that point. "the wall street journal." it was a very different world from today. there was no such thing as cable news. there are now five broadcast networks, depending how you count them. "usa today" did not exist in that mix. "newsweek," "u.s. news" are struggling and one of them may not exist in the long run. we're not doing things the way i studied journalism. bloggers have a big influence. e video journalists are now rolling and most every station has them. what are your thoughts on the evolution of your former industry? >> i think the bar has been lowered. i think that when you have a professional journalist and professional cameraman or camerawoman going out to cover a story, it's better if they each focus on what they're doing versus what is happening now which is to send one person to do all duties and that's just not what brought television journalism or the journalism we knew in television, that's not what brought it to the pinnacle that it reached. so as someone who i think went through the best years of television journalism, the '70s, '80s and '90s. it's painful to watch. i'm able to watch it now because i'm retired. not that i'm home watching news but i am able to watch it if and when i want to. it's bothersome to see what is happening. i understand the reasons it's happening. i understand that it is economic. but when you lower the bar on something that is par

he was the lead author on this article it came out in the journal of climate change, i think, last year that looked that range of literature out there and the issues addressed and regions and topics and so on. we actually have on-line that institute this bibliography and you can do searchs by author, subject, reen on, whatever. there's the url. i stuck in the word reservoir and it turns out there's 60 some odd articles on this. so this is not new scientific subject. i'll talk about four things. what should be done. there have been proposals for decades of what water managers should do both generally and specifically. i'm going to talk about what has been done and argue that actually, very little has been done. there has been a handful where things have been taken to improve our situation, but not many. i'm going to talk a little about what has not been done. there again there are far more examples we've done major things in water area but ignored climate change. and what shouldn't be done. there are things we should not do given our understanding of climate change and water resources. i

what i did was put it in the journal entries and it became what i should have known from the beginning because a began my colleges career as a film major wanting to make films not knowing i wanted to tell stories on the page and not on the screen. what i did was a stepped back and this is something one of my group members always tells me. where's at camera? what's happening? see from the camera's ankle. i realized he was too far away from everything. this book was different than the first book because in the first book i had so many voices and this book everything had to be seen from steven's point of view. when i narrowed it down the story told itself much the process of a writer is elizabeth said, you cannot be afraid to make mistakes. that's the writing process. we are making a lot of mistakes i am constantly rewriting and looking at something and saying, i could say it with less words. i could look at something and say, she would kill me if i did this and i would change it. there are all the things. it's a constant process. no book falls on to the page and the words don't just fall
