but under pressure from the kennedy family, she resigned her position that viking. she was able to join doubleday a few months later, early in 1978 and there she remained for 16 years until the day she died. her career there was much happier. and if we begin now to shift from the beginning of her career in publishing to a consideration of the books themselves, we see that they fall into a number of groups that sort of classified according to themes in her life. i didn't want to just sort of cover the book chronologically. they seem to me they felt a certain kind of thematic areas in which it can also connect with her life and that was more revealing about her personality. i'd like to take you through those groups of books rather than through a strictly chronological account of her career. the first of those teams is marriage. well, everyone i think knows about jackie was the wife of husbands who were not entirely faithful to her. so it's interesting to find her taking diana breland, editor of vogue museum of art to do a book which featured two women, very prominently

and the same is true of jacqueline kennedy onassis. you can tell a lot about her and a lot she may not have been willing to tell you herself about the hundred books she brought into print when she was an editor first at viking, and then at doubleday. for the last 20 year of her life, from about 1975 until when she died in 1994. if anything, an editor's books are even more indicative of her personality pause they -- because they include work that she's selected, she's investigated her time in, and -- invested her time in, and she's helped to bring to publication. so what i'd like to do is tell you the story of those 100 books and a little bit about how they can connect to her life and who she was. the first -- there are two things that i'd like to say about jackie's personality which i think you may not, may not know about. and the first is that she was a reader. among her earliest memories was being sent up to her mother's bedroom to take a nap when she was a child and getting out of the bed, taking down one of her mother's books from t

[laughter] one the other interesting aspects of the pook for me is we know she was fierce in protecting her privacy. he didn't want this biography of him written, and he told eugene kennedy this much, and jackie and kennedy gt the idea of cornering him at the democratic convention and asking him permly at the convention with the notion that he had so much respect for the kennedys and so much respect for yak ky that he'd immediately cave in, but he didn't. when they said we want to do your biography, he said, i'll look into it, and he never called them back. [laughter] she went ahead and she was willing to sponsor this biography even though he was an unwilling subject of the biography. she also did a book with stuart udall who was secretary of the interior under both jfk and lbj, a very strong environmentalist before his time. he's only

he is an active member of the kennedy who was often in touch with us when there has been illegal removals' or trees have gotten damage. we appreciate the efforts he has made and his commitment to the neighborhood and to improving his own property. i think the challenges that the city policy really seeks to preserve established trees. certainly one aspect is the mortality rate of younger trees. they are more prone to vandalism, they are more prone to potential destruction by accidents than established trees. there are also fundamentally providing more environmental benefits to the city then young trees. i think that coupled with the fact that san francisco has a reduced tree canopy. we don't have the kind of coverage that many other larger cities do and we don't have a lot of mature trees in san francisco and our policy is very preservationist. in this case, a city policy is at odds with the city -- the owners' desire to make an improvement to their property. i can understand wanting to have matching trees but are finding was that one tree had a structural problem that cannot be corrected

kennedy. that was controversial from the start, saw these pictures to begin with, she's a ringer for jackie kennedy the entire production. every time katie holmes would come out in a jackie kennedy outfit all the tabloids would run pictures of it. and then, it sort of became a little bit of a punch line. it looked like she was playing dress up. and on screen then she doesn't really have -- it's a very difficult thing to play a real person. a real, living person that we know. she doesn't really have the gravitas to pull off the role. and the accent, as you just saw, it's a little -- for eight hours, it's a long time to be, you know, watching her play this character in the way that she does. >> also this news out there that historians looked at the script and said it was inaccurate. >> right. historians did look at the script. on our website thedailybeast.com we have scenes from the first episode that we got exclusively. they've toned down the more controversial elements when you watch it now. but, you know, it's still joe kennedy kind of comes off as a caricature. sort of like a karl rove figure. an

kennedy's detail? >> unfortunately, i was there at the time of the assassination. i was responsible for mrs. kennedy. i was in the follow-up car and witnessed the president being shot and tried to interseed to get to him beforehand, of course, i was unable to do so, so i saw everything unfold. i was a witness to everything. what's instory -- >> what inspired you to write about it? >> i wrote the forward about the book. i was promised it would be facts and no gossip. i wanted to contribute to it as long as i could check the facts, which i did. >> your role in writing? >> well, i basically helped him write the book. he's a secret service agent, and his writing was more stick to the facts, and i helped frame the story, put the story together, interviewed a lot of the agents, and got very involved in the project and it's been a privilege an honor to work with these great men. >> what was probably the most interesting thing for you in putting this project together in >> the most interesting thing was it's hard to believe, but all of these agents who witnessed the assassination of president kennedy never sp
