for the last 10 years i have been married to someone who was a deputy chief of the lapd and i now refer to him as being in recovery. at the same time, i have been working extensively with home with industries, and my brother said, if he had dreamed i would be married to a policeman and working with a priest, somebody would be lying. i have been working with gangs and been involved with gangs, trying to figure them out for 34 years. i began as a young social worker in south los angeles. with gang infested housing projects that are now almost mythic, jordan downs and nickerson gardens, and i worked in these projects during what is referred to as the decade of death, when crack and unregulated gun availability laid waste to communities of color. in los angeles during the late 1980's and early 1990's, there were 1000 homicides per year in the city of los angeles, not the county, the city. now, we have between 203 hundred homicides per year. people talk about the gang problem having been addressed. i want to share with you, what i experienced, what i have learned, i am not a typical academic

the lapd called him a hug- hugger. i will repeat everything that they have said, not because of sore afraid of using profanity but because it was a different lapd. it was rumored that the mexican mafia was allowed to meet in his church and that he held guns for gang members. and he was helping gang members across the border. i am certain he knew where the body of jimmy hoffa was buried when you got done listening to the rumors. now, the lapd uses home with industries as an integral part of its anti-gang efforts. not all of them, not 9000 members, but i can tell you this, homeboy industries have their annual benefit to honor people in the community as well as former gang members, the person they honored was chief charlie of the lapd. unless you think that was an anomaly, the year before they honored the sheriff. there is an alliance between community-based organizations, and law-enforcement. this is not enough. there has also been in the streets, ongoing, a relationship, a delicate one, a thoughtful one between the loss

i have done extensive work with law enforcement, with the lapd and the los angeles county sheriff's. i am here to tell you that crime has been driven down in los angeles because of their efforts, but not only because of their efforts. so what does the collaboration look like. i want you to keep some ideas in mind. there is no first among equals. what we learned in los angeles was that oppression alone was not the answer. it did not work. there were record highs in gang violence in 2005. i want to tell you what has happened between 2005 and 2012. number one, the grass roots -- the disorganize, fragmented, passionate grass roots must be part of this. the community members who go to county supervisors meetings, the members who pass out fliers, the youths who have been in the juvenile justice system that are now part of the coalition -- those individuals must have a seat at the table. no. 2. community-based organizations. that operate on a shoestring and often without any kind of coverage anywhere. they must be legitimized and made part of the conversation. i have witnessed this with hom

and as police piece together leads, they are also getting help from the lapd, since the victim was visitingmerging of a man trying to get his life back on track. surveillance video captures a waiting killer. police say ten minutes later, this man killed brandon woodard of los angeles in a brazen execution-style murder on a busy manhattan street. where brandon woodard is heading is unclear. police believe he may have been looking for an address when he was looking down at his phone. he briefly turned his head, saw his killer, didn't seem to recognize him, and then kept walking. moments later, woodard was shot at close range in the back of the head with a .9-millimeter gun. his killers, say police, got back into a car where a driver was waiting and took off. surveillance tape in a tunnel later put investigators on their path to queens. ballistics tests matched the weapon to one used in a queens shooting in 2009. how this connects to woodard, a 31-year-old law student and father of a 4-year-old girl, remains unclear. his family in los angeles is at a loss to explain a possible motive. >> our h

what clues might be on the hard drive. lapd detective mark fuhrman joins us. in terms of investigation, at this point what do we need to know and why? we know who did it, and he's dead. there's no suspicion that there is a co-conspirator out there or that he had help. yet, you know, we're obsessively going after this. why? >> well, greta, you have to do it just as a matter of protocol. you have to match up all the ballistics for every bullet that's comparable to that fire arm. you have to do that. you have to do the forensics, the toxicology on the shooter, make sure the shooter's gun was actually the gun that was used to kill himself. you have to put all these pieces of the puzzle together because you really don't know where this is going to go. you don't know if somebody could have actually been in contact with adam lanza and actually gave him the idea or was in a chat room and really kind of prodded him into this crime. you don't know where it's going, and i think that's why they're so aggressive. >> all right. what could possibly be on the hard drive? why
