the two women died, jackson survived. christine maddela fox5 local las vegas>> the two women killed in the shooting are melissa mendoza and jennifer chicas. they're california. one child is dead and another is fighting to stay alive this morning after suffering abuse by women trusted with caring for them. the two women are behind bars this morning, for the seperate cases out of north las vegas. fox5s miguel martinez valle spoke to one of the victims families. jessica lopez,mother " he was a happy little 7 month old you know, grabbing everything, trying new foods... he started to stand, started to crawl, happy baby." baby jonathan had only been going to his daycare for a few days, when north las vegas police say the woman caring for him dropped him into his playpen out of frustration, and left him brain damaged... " he just lays in the crib, he opens his eyes but we can't really tell if he sees yet" in the three months since his injuries, he's had 6 surgeries... his parents say doctors don't know how well he'll be able to recover... "completely different baby"

the las vegas strip is usually packed with traffic. so has the time come to close it off to cars and trucks for good? the idea was floated once again... during a county commission meeting tuesday. with the valley expected to see an increase in both residents and making the strip a pedestrians-only mall could help ease congestion in the tourist corridor. however.... critics say shifting traffic to other streets - just isn't feasible. "the two streets along the back, whether its koval or frank sinatra drive or industrial, dean martin, simply can't handle that kind of trafffic that we're talking about. it's often times used for deliveries, employees and what not, and at that rate it gets very congested at times and causes a huge traffic." some resorts on the strip... like the bellagio.... only have entrances on the strip... and would likely fight the idea. right now... there is no formal vote expected - or official proposal in the works for closing off the strip. wynn resorts is moving forward with an expansive retail complex on the strip.

more changes are coming to the las vegas strip. the county approved a new convention building and shopping center. commissioners approved two separate plans... s-l-s las vegas is building a three- story building with a pool on top as a convention space. wynn las vegas will add a two story shopping center. still no word yet on when construction will start. and visitors to the las vegas motorspeedway will soon have another nearby an investment company is planning to build an 18-million dollar, 125-room hotel. construction is set to begin in july... it should take about a year to complete. the hotel will be a starwood property. and is expected to create dozens of jobs. preparing for disaster.... from earthquakes to hazardous spills. nearly 200 soldiers-- taking part in the training exercises today at nellis airforce base. some trained on rescuing people trapped in rubble... others learned how to de-contaminate victims if they're covered in dangerous materials these guard members practice these drills twice a year, but are always on ale

the spewing water. an incredible, but freezing sight. las vegas is in for another gorgeous warm day on saturday with temperatures around the same as friday for both overnight lows and afternoon highs. tonight expect low temperatures around 48 with highs tomorrow around 74, both within 1 of our high and low for today. a weak low pressure system will miss las vegas to the north but will bring with it a few thicker clouds and enough cold air at higher levels of the atmosphere to cool things down slightly. temperatures will fall by 2-4 for sunday with some stronger north winds along for the ride. wind advisories are possible and lake mead where gusts to 40mph are possible but are unlikely for the las vegas valley as wind gusts will likely peak around 20-25mph sunday into monday. those winds are a product of another high pressure system which is moving into the area and will be directly overhead tuesday. expect highs by then to be back into the low to mid 70s helped out by the stronger winds overnight which will keep temperatures very mild. wednesday w

the man was taken to u-m-c in exreme critical condition. north las vegas fire says he passed away from his injuries over the weekend. no firefighters were hurt. the cause of the a pedestrian is dead after police say he was hit by a car while trying to catch a bus. the crash happened around six this morning near camino al norte and lone mountain. witnesses told police the man was in a rush to catch another bus when he was hit. he was taken to u-m-c where he died. the driver did stay on scene... and police believe they will not be charged. the coroner will release the victim's identity. dozens rallied on the strip demanding justice for a man shot and killed by police on new year's eve.
