the country exploring american history. next a look at our recent visit to lexington, kentucky. you are watching american history tv, all weekend, every weekend, on c-span3. >> you are in what we call the best spot in the whole world right here on the grounds of keeneland race course in lexington, kentucky. it fits into being the horse capital and thoroughbred capital of the world in a number of ways. we are not only a great race course with a very pastoral setting, but we are the world's largest thoroughbred park from a sales and option house standpoint. we sell to buyer's from 52 different countries and they run and race all over the world. our sales company started here in 1943, 2 years after the race track opened. the sales were started because of world war ii because of the real shortage. most of the horsemen worshiping their horses to be sold and with the real shortage, they could not use trains. they set up an auction company on the grounds to be able to service all the local horsemen that were running and raising their horses here locally. it was set up as a trust because
