the lion was shot and killed per our safety protocols. our thoughts and prayers go out to our friend and family -- and to her family at this time, at this trying time. >> reporter: the 24-year-old volunteer has been identified as dianna hanson from washington state. her facebook page shows her pictured with large cats. her father released a statement last night saying in part dianna was so excited at working at cat haven and living in california. her favorites were the tiger and the lion couscous who killed her today. >> we're moving over to the african lions and i'm going into the den. >> reporter: jennifer michaels, also known as jungle jenny, got an up close view of the lion while getting a tour of the animal sanctuary called cat haven in central california. >> i didn't see any type of aggressive behavior or anything that i needed to be worried about. >> cat haven is a 100-acre wooded sanctuary, home to some of the rarest cats in the world, including lions, tigers and leopards. it describes itself as an innovative park, dedicated to the

patient is in the closure. lions been taken care of. >> reporter: a person was attacked but still alive at the cat haven facility in dunlap. when investigators arrived they found dianna hanson in an enclosure with this lion, couscous. the lion wasn't able to be coaxed away and shot the lion and gave hanson medical care. >> it was killed. >> reporter: hanson died in the enclosure. the 24-year-old was an intern at cat haven. according to a statement on her father's facebook page she drove down to the facility from seattle with her father at the beginning of the year. she was working on a six-month internship with the cats at the facility. >> i always in the back of my mind i had this feeling this could happen someday. completely fearless. totally thought no problem. never going to happen to her. >> reporter: on the cat haven facebook page dozens posted condolences for both dianna hanson and couscous. some even criticized law enforcement for putting down the lion. cat haven was founded 20 years ago in the sierra foothi

. >>> new details on the deadly lion attack. e are learning tonight the young intern who died apparently had no intention of getting close to the big cat that eventually killed her. joe tells us what she was really doing in the enclosure and why she thought she had nothing to fear. >> reporter: it turns out she wasn't purposely alone with him in the cage and wasn't malled to death, and that's according to the coroner who says the 5-year-old lion named cous cous was closed off while the issue turn was cleaning the larger cage. but the coroner says somehow he escaped the smaller cage, perhaps used his paw to lift open the latch and he escaped, pinning the 24-year-old and crushing her. >> she was fearless. >> reporter: the father told cnn the coroner told him the lion did not mall his daughter but was trying to play with her and, in the process, he sat on top of her. he broke her neck. dianna had worked with them in the past and her dad said she had no problem at all getting inside the cages with them, a constant source of worry. >>
