what's the role of local news as you see the video marketplace maturing? >> i've always thought, as people said, that local broadcasting, local television stations, were going to be outmode outmoded. were probably in all these new development areas were going to be antiquity. and i've always felt otherwise. the strongest local television stations are the ones that provide the most news and information and community programming. and so i think that is -- continues to be very vibrant. and clearly, if you look at the success of any television station in any market, they are mow depend dent upon their ability to deliver news than they are having to hit a television program of the moment. >> senator, i find that based on just viewing in the greater seattle area where two of us live, or actually i guess -- you work for one, i live in seattle. the local stations are utilizing online now for a depth of local news that is impractical on-air. so there is barely ten minutes that goes by in a broadcast of a local independent or affiliate station that does not refer to

i worked at a little leaguer in pennsylvania called the daily local news. very small town paper. not the best edited paper. we once ran a headline that said women would be raped. [laughter] but that is where i got my start in journalism. i was not great at reporting. i was an english major and went into journalism because i wanted to write, but i learned that writing is not the key skill in journalism. talking to people is the key skill. sometimes you have to talk to people who are intimidating or hostile. good reporters are able to do that indeed there train of thought and not get flustered. i was not good at that. after i became a columnist but was still dealing with news events, in 1982 i was in new hampshire writing columns about the new hampshire presidential primary. i spent a day following the then first lady barbara bush around. not as a stalker, but as a member of the press corps. it was a big press corps, lots of people. the motorcade of us going and around and all these dignitaries in various events. at the end of the day, mrs. bush had a press conference at a hotel bal

it's very hard -- at one point, and i know this was true of "the washington post," the argument was made that local is the new king and we all have to be local. then you start getting patch and huffington post and other things. and everyone can blog. suddenly, it doesn't necessarily mean that local is going to be the new king on the block. so i think a lot of medium-sized newspapers are going to be gone in five years. and probably a lot of radio stations as well. they don't do newspaper anymore any way. >> i agree that i think the train that i lost earlier, i was talking about consolidation. ken is right. there will be consolidation in the business. there are more players than there needs to be. but i don't agree that this is terrible for the democracy. i don't think it's great if people are only listening to ideas they already believe in. i'm not sure that it wasn't always that way before about half a century ago. in the history of american journalism, it was from 1950 to 2000 when everything centralized and newspapers became more centrist and the prized objectivity went for long-form journalism and it was p
