the mandalay bay did a great job of hiring police officers. they had sufficient staffing for the concert. when this individual decided to fire upon the crowd which was approximately 22,000 individuals it's very difficult to manage that side crowd. you have to insure you have the proper staffing. as described our officers responded immediately in conjunction with the fire department. as soon as the fire department arrived, they were able to identify where the weapon was being discharged from in proximity. it's hard to tell what floor from the outside. once they gained entry into the hotel in conjunction with security and through phone calls they were able to get it down to a possible floor. once they made entry on to the holloway they immediately knew what room. >> reporter: there were reports when s.w.a.t. entered maybe there was smoke alarm from the shells. is there any truth to that? >> i don't know about smoke alarms. i know he killed himself. we'll have to go through our body worn camera and existing video whether we engaged him at the same

it was across the street from the mandalay bay, and john is just south of the strip. john, good morning. >> reporter: while police searching the mandalay bay hotel here say they have found several weapons in the room on the 32nd floor that the gunman used to fire down into this crowd of concert-goers. cell phone video helping police piece together what many of these people are calling the scariest time of their life. initially many people thought the cracks they were hearing are fireworks, but it quickly became clear that this was an attack. what sounded like automatic gunfire rang out late sunday night. the bullets spraying into a crowd of roughly 40,000 concert-goers on the las vegas strip. these videos captured the chaos unfolding on the ground. there was confusion about where the bullets were coming from, or even if they were bullets. some were frozen in panic. others fled for their lives. >> and all of a sudden, we heard, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. countless times and we all thought it was firecrackers. and then it kept ongoing, and then he fired for a bit, and then

lester holt, not far from the mandalay bay hotel. out the mandalay bay hotel, it's been the focal point of all of this from the late hours of last night. specifically those windows. when we first saw them, it wasn't exactly clear what we were looking at. then we realized that shattered glass, the gold reflective glass, and those are curtains bulking out. for a while they were flapping in the breeze with the suction from an inside door on the hallway. those windows, some have they'reized, at least one was used by the gunman. some have they'reized he got a large enough room to be able to have two shooting angles, two shooting locations. our own correspondent joe friar has found his way to a room six floors up from where the shooting took place. and is it does give us an idea of how the venue looks from up there. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, brian. we were actually staying at this hotel overnight, which is why we're in here. it's a little confusing, but basically there are a few floors of the mandalay bay tower that are actually part

this was from a shot from the mandalay bay hotel. an eyewitness who was staying there, looking down on the concert venue, and you see those people running for cover. at first many thought it was a firecracker and then the realization, this was a nightmare scenario. >> there have been attacks like this around the world. in india, there was a major attack several years ago with a gunman using automatic weapons which exponentially increases the toll of those injured or killed. >> we are hearing a lot of witnesses describing the same idea. they first think it's firecrackers. we hear that so frequently in shootings. in one case it was that quick succession of shots that triggered that realization. in another case the man had his friend get shot right in front of him. how do you manage a swraituatio like this when there are so many people and for quite some time many were unaware this was a shooting. >> first, find the gunman, two, treat those who have been injured, depending on the severity of their injuries. triage takes place, all hands

were they in the back side or i know mandalay bay is to the right of the concert stage. you have any information on that? >> here's what's bizarre. our rooms were in mandalay bay. i was on the 23rd floor, my room, and so my view had to be pretty much the same view. we didn't realize the shots were coming from there, but i had on a couple of occasions looked down out of my room and could see the entire festival grounds so where my room was situated, i believe close to where the shots were coming from is you could see everything. could you see where all the patrons were. you could see the entire -- basically it's a parking lot that was set up with a stage and a few tents and a bunch of country music fans. >> and buzz, do you have any idea how many people were at that concert, as jason aldean was performing? >> i was just talking toof my co-workers we don't know the number but with jason aldean performing you see people you couldn't see the end of it from that stage. it was thousands and thousands of people. you couldn't see the end of the crowd. >> buzz, thank you very muc

part of the mandalay bay complex. joe, give us a sense, you heard stooe steve patterson talking about the tenor on the street changing since the las vegas police department confirmed they don't believe there are any more shooters. what are you seeing in terms of the activity in the air or on the ground below? >> reporter: yeah, we can tell you exactly what steve is seeing, what we're seeing from up above. we're in the four seasons hotel which is part of the mandalay bay complex. it's it's as high as you can get in the mandalay bay. we were initially told when we heard what was going on, our team called down to the front desk, they told ustion to stay put at this time. we haven't received any new information from them. no one is answering right now which is understandable considering what's unfolding right now t. we don't know if the workers were also told to lock down and stay safe. we're not sure at this point. so getting new information about our situation, we haven't received any, but we do know there's a police pre

they saw the flashes coming from the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay. officers on the ground saw those flashes. they got word to other officers who went up to the roof on the 32nd floor. they isolated the room or two rooms and it was an explosive breach. e he would not confirm whether or not officers shot him or he took his own life. >> they are going to tell us what happened. you have to make sure you have your facts striegt. there's going to be who knows lawsuits and everything that comes with this. you have people. think about all the wheels in motion. it seems like it went on forever. it seems like the response was quick. >> it was but if you're going through this, time just stops. nothing can prepare you to see that many bodies in a small area. our heart goes out to everybody there. i hope they get it. >> i'm just listening to my producer because we have an eyewitness who is about to join us who there was with her 4-year-old daughter. we had heard already from some of the country music stars they did see kids in the audience. there were kids on thei

you got out of the concert venue and they directed you into the mandalay bay hotel. e trapped so people were kicking down fences, we made it into the back and were directed into the mandalay bay and as we were coming through we didn't know it but apparently he was upstairs shooting into the rooms, so we made it out of the mandalay bay and over to mcdonald's. then we walked away here. you came a long way down the strip here. 0h, oh, yeah. and you say it seemed like as many as 15 times he reloaded. easily, with at least 30 rounds he was firing from each magazine. it was four or five minutes of gunshots. my sister had video so it was four or five minutes of us hiding behind cars and trying to get as far away as we could. when the shooting stopped, you would run and then when you heard bullets you hit the dirt. we weren't running, people were nice and calm, a few people were trying to run but we stopped them because it went down into a gooseneck and started bottling up, so everybody calmly kept going and we made it out, and then we ran, and once we made it to the streets

that is the mandalay bay. that large hotel right there. the concert was crease from the mandalay bay, across the las vegas boulevard. and all of a sudden people tell me they started hearing these shots. and one person told me they happened to look at the mapped lay b mandalay bay. they looked up and saw glass breaking and light. the 32nd floor is when officers went and app helped steven paddock, 64 years old, las vegas resident they say. right now they are executing a search warrant in that hotel room. they will have an inventory. we did hear the word rifles they believe were in there. a search warrant will also be executed at his home. this city was at a stand still after 10:03 at night. people are being escorted away from the scene. they got on buses. they went to the thomas mac center at the university of nevada. the freeways were shut down. mccarran international airport flights diverted to other areas because they did didn't know what was happening. this community is starting to reopen now. but there are so many questions and no answer
