i recently had a chance to visit the marina district for the first time. it was very beautiful and very clean. i did not understand why there was some much debate about the shelter and the first place. aside from money and building regulations, i understand there is a certain level of fear that comes with homeless activity in such a beautiful district like the marina. no one wants to see the marina look like the tenderloin. i want to reassure anyone with of the concern that you've shelters are nothing like other homeless shelters. all the youth that i have encountered have all been very motivated individuals whose ultimate goal was to have jobs and go to school. it is my belief that living in an area like the marina would only benefit the homeless youth to continue their pursuit. san francisco is a very iconic city. i believe that what happens here influences what happens elsewhere in this country. i believe that we can really show the rest of the world that caring about youth who don't have a lot of choices in life generally encourage others to do the sam

i grew up in the marina district close to the palace of fine arts. my parents still live in the same set of plants that i live in. i went to grammar school here. i went to st. ignatius here. i am a proud wild cat. i went to college at loyola- marymount university in los angeles. i had a scholarship to play baseball. i remember coming down here to christie field, when my dad was in the military, seeing how the beaches have transformed into but we have today. you cannot beat the views, of course. it just holds summoning memories and i can come here with our kids, our family. i ended up going to ireland to get a master's degree at the university college of dublin. i went back to the states and went to law school at university of pennsylvania. then i came back, and choosing to live in san francisco was natural to me. when you are a child, you do not realize what you had until you leave home. i had the opportunity to live in los angeles, abroad in ireland, and there is no place like home, when you are from san francisco. i have been a corporate attorney a

i grew up in the marina district. i went through the 1989 earthquake in a personal way. my family home was severely damaged in the earthquake. we were forced out of our home for over a yeawhile it was repaired. we spent the first three weeks volunteering for the red cross shelter, seeing my neighbors getting tagged and told whether they could go back in or would never be able to go back into their homes. i witnessed firsthand what our public safety departments did. for that, we are forever grateful. it is a testament that we have mayor lee and the heads of all our public safety departments with us today. as a kid whose parents were founding members of nert, for me it is such a personal thing. it is something i am happy and proud to be part of. it is about preparing for the future. i am proud to serve on the disaster council with mayor lee. we are doing so much with the department of emergency management and city hall to make sure we are prepared for the next big one. it is also really important to remember the past. it is really important to honor those who serve us, kep
