i'm an archivist as the national archives in college park, maryland. and today we're going to look at the deck logs of various ships that were located at pearl harbor during the attack. a deck log is a recording of all the activities that occurred on the ship in a 24-hour period. this could include any injuries to sailors, any sailors coming on and off the ship. anything according to the ship at the time. so in this instance, the attack on pearl harbor. we're going to first look at the "uss chew." one of the older destroyers. it's a world war i-era destroyer. it had four stacks. four smoke stacks. and it was a little slower than the contemporary destroyers at the time which we'll look at some of those. the "uss chew" after the attack was used primarily in an escort role for convoys and things of that nature. so this is what the officers on board wrote on december 7th. starting at around 6:00 in the morning, they received ten gallons of milk and 4 1/2 gallons of ice cream which was recorded on board. and they brought this on board. and interestingly enou

now the notable thing about the deck log for the uss maryland is, at the time, it appears that a lot of the radio transmissions went to the uss maryland, meaning a lot of the radio transmissions were recorded in the deck log itself. and what that ultimately means is a lot of the confusion that was occurring at the time of the attack, meaning there was no idea where the japanese were at the time are what they're going to do next, lends itself to the deck logs. for instance, at 12:01 a.m. troops reported landing and enemy takers were reported four miles off the coast of ohahu. as most people know, that was not the case, but at the time they were not sure if the attack was part of something bigger. if they were going to launch an invasion to knock out the naval base. we now know that was not the case. another entry of note was at 11:43 a.m., the further continuation of confusion, the maryland writes that enemy troops wearing blue coveralls -- not only did we think they were attacking, we knew what they just like. it is viable just for the first and -- firsthand accounts we received. you

maryland. up until recently, we had a center amongst the best in maryland by both state and federal ratings systems. a five-star center. they received 26 inconsequential, no life harms, very low-level deficiencies in their annual inspection. 26 of them. four of the deficiencies were for a single malfunctioning wheelchair. as a result of that survey, that center went from a five-star center to a one-star center. and it's now a two-star center. but it's amongst the best in maryland. so again, the survey can be valuable and powerful. now it's interesting, if i'm a consumer, i think the survey is valuable for the reasons i've just said, but again, it can go either way based on the results of one consumer. the self-reported data with regard to quality or staffing. staffing is a little less of an issue now that cms is requiring payroll journal reporting where they have to report actual payroll data. if i'm a consumer or hospital partner, i want to have survey data. i want to have payroll data and i want to have quality data. and the value of the quality data and the payroll data is that unlike the survey
