that is the clout of the naacp. and through the years through the years, the naacp has a long history starting in its early birth. but i want to carry it forward into the 1950's and the utilization of thurgood marshal and the legal defense fund. but the lawyers of the naacp that rose to defend those in the civil rights movement who were the foot soldiers and the actors of the civil rights movement meaning they were the activists and the cerebral leaders, the lawyers, that came together to provide them the legal arm our they needed. thurgood marshall had a fond expression and appreciation for the naacp. we come through the years of 1950's and 19650 -- 1960's and the kind of support that the naacp provided in lasting and embracing. it embraced the southern christian leadership conference which i worked for. it embraced various other organizations and various faiths in our community and embraced any organization that was moving towards justice, as dr. king said, bending that arc towards justice. the naacp was there with

and that did an enormous amount for the naacp. his star lawyer who was legenday for his courage. it took the organization to a different level. marshall really made the second coming in the naacp from the mid-40s on. narrator: as the cause moved forward through the 1940s, the u.s. entered world war two. marshall was now faced with one more distraction from the education strategy, as he was forced to defend black soldiers who were victims of discrimination in the segregated services. roger wilkins: i think the war really changed things, because these guys came back and some were dead and some didn't have arms or legs or whatever. and they were fighting for freedom in the usa and the american way. they were fairly young men and they had lives to live, and, you know, and they would stand up for themselves in ways that black people earlier had not done. jose anderson: they had been to europe, they had been to places where they could eat where they wanted. where they were not thrown out of public accommodations, and they were not going

hicks was running against the naacp philosophy and she swept aside all opposition. e whole white community supported her in opposition to the naacp's desire for integrated schools and housing and otherwise. i say that to say this. even the jewish community, which is supposed to be pro liberal, went against the naacp, or against integration in practice. but they're for it in principle. so the only solution is separation and the honorable elijah muhammad says this can be brought about simply by allowing our people to be exposed to the truth about ourselves, about the white man and our condition in this country and once we are exposed to the complete truth about things as they actually exist in this country, the masses of black people will choose complete separation from this entire system, economic system, political system whatever other adjective you want to attach to it. let us go back to our own people, live among our own kind and solve their own problems ourselves. if the white man doesn't want us to, since we can't get along together in peace in this country -- le

for more on that, we turn to cornell william brooks, president and ceo of the naacp and richard beary, president of the international association of chiefs of police. thank you both for joining me tonight. months later, after all the discussions of ferguson and staten island, what progress are we making mr. brooks in trying to get to police reform? >> i'm hopeful there is an emerging consent in both our ability to bring about policing reform and a concrete set of policy proposals. so whether it be at the federal level and the racial profiling act, which would tie federal funding to the training of police officers so that they don't engage in racial profiling to the naacp-supported and passage of the death in custody act. up until a little while ago you would ask the common sense question: how many police-involved homicides are there in the country? there's no way to answer that question. i believe we're on our way to answering that question. to more flexibility in terms of promoting appointing special prosecutors. so there are a number of concrete proposals, reforms that we can pursue

the naacp was tracking lynchings. ida b. opments around 1915, there were going up again. and the film is so inflammatory that that was a big part of the protest it would incite even further lynchings. it inspired a rebirth of the klan which, by 1915, had fizzled out. by the end of this year, the the film had moved through the north as some kind of film campaign and move the south and opened in atlanta in early december of 1915 and within days, a man by the name of william simmons, would later say he was inspired by the film that took a number of confederate supporters and went to stone mountain and burned a cross. and revived the klan and grew exponentially. in the late teens and through the 1920's. >> where are you from originally? >> connecticut. >> where did you go to school? >> harvard. >> and so did trotter? >> a few years ahead of me. of the fascinating complexity of this drama is that the civil rights leadership, trotter, dubois, the naacp their goal, practical solution, was to get this film censored. going into the story, when i was researching it to write this book, i found that deeply troubling. trotter is a newspaperman. he is the editor of a black weekly newspaper. you would think he would be waving the first amendment and are. -- banner. that is another thing that requires going back in time, developing context, and how learning that dubois and trotter were both uncomfortable. now we're talking about civil liberties. art, expression and limiting or restricting it, banishing it outright. they were uncomfortable with that. to really drill down, why do they do it? first of all, for a couple of reasons that are fascinating, the first amendment was not anywhere nearly as robust as we take it for granted today. secondly, this is the front end of this new medium. the supreme court of the united states the month before the film opened in boston had ruled unanimously in a case out of ohio that film did not come under the f

the naacp has always had student chapters, and particularly in historically black colleges, which is what this is. of course we had a chapter. the chapter had an advisor, a couple of advisors. in the course of meeting with the advisors and the students who are members of the chapter a lot of conversations took place about what can we do to make things better, do we need to be doing anything, other people are doing things in other parts of the country. over a period of more than a year, there were conversations about what we could do and it kind of boiled down to sit-ins, let's look at woolworth's, let's look at what can be done. these meetings took place right here on this campus at the student union. bennett college and a&t and the bennett college advisors as well. there were plans made to start the sit-ins. those plans begin in the fall of 1959. somewhere along the way they were advised by the president of bennett college, who happened to be my auntie, who said you should really not do this until after christmas vacation because if you start this and you go home for christmas vacat

in that year, african americans formed the branch of the naacp. so this 100th century mark takes on a significance. not only from the national american level but from a californian perspective as well. much of that was contirbuted to the work of the historical society culture and others. the historical society was founded in 1955 again by a small group of men and women who came together to establish the society. the society itself is the lynnal decedent of the san francisco and literary associate that was established by african americans in san francisco in 1853. so this is a long, long history of the african american history and the presence of african descendants in san francisco prior to san francisco even becoming san francisco. there was also a local chapter of the association for the study of african american life and history. these two groups merged in 1958. 2015 marks the 60th anniversary in the cultural society. we join you and the board in saluting your black history month honestries. we would like to offer an annual honorry membership to
