what's the latest you've heard from the shopping mall in nairobi? >> it is not as dramatic as it was before. people are no longer running from the scene. we are aware that the situation is still ongoing. a lot of people have got away. it isn't entirely clear whether this was an organized hostage operation whether they were contained in a certain area or whether there was just panic. i'm hearing a short time ago from a chief executive of a private security firm in nairobi that he had one of his colleagues injured on the ground cross fire between police and the gunmen. the interior ministry earlier said this was a robbery, the police said it was a robbery. they seem to be now changing their minds, although they are not certain it is a terrorist assistant as they refer to. this is an ongoing situation with at least 15 dead. >> the interior ministry saying this may be an attack by terrorists. any idea on the number of attackers who may be involved? >> first report was suggesting there were five attackers but unconfirmed reports suggest they may be enteri

let's go back to the developments on the ground in nairobi. fast-moving developments. andoff now for three days. we have gunmen hold up in the west gate shopping mall, a popular mall with kenya and patriots and we have seen black clouds as you can see rising from the roof of the shopping mall and heard loud explosions and gunfire and heavy and sustained gunfire going on throughout the past few hours. looking at the live pictures we are watching kenya soldiers running to take positions rounds the mall and very difficult to get a really clear picture of what is going on because of course reporters and caravan are back and security is an issue and not just the lives of the people but also not wanting to transmit information to people who are inside. al shabaab has been prolific about tweeting messages warning the kenya army not to go after them and they will not negotiate and will kill hostages if any kind of assault has been going on and we know the military has been going through and clearing shops and searching out all the various outlet's and trying to find people who

i'm joined now on the phone about nairobi by zalubia kasam. she was at the mall and is the aunt of cnn international anchor zane vergy. thank you for being with us. can you tell us what you saw? >> well, we had gone to westgate mall. after finishing our coffee, we went up to the supermarket, did some shopping. we had just barely entered and the lights went off. and it's strange that the generator didn't come on for quite a while, and we thought that's a bit weird. the next thing we know, we heard some shots and people rushing. so we rushed to the back up to the supermarket and shut ourselves, trying to get anything that would save us from a random shooting, because we heard random shots all over the place. and it was quite terrifying. in fact, we even heard shots 30 feet from us, and at one stage, i thought come near us. and it was just so worrying and, you know, people praying and crying, and it was rather traumatizing for everybody. and at one stage, we heard that there are terrorists, that they were holding hostages, and that they were all o
