this idea of open government is embedded in the mission of the national archives. our work is built on the belief that citizens have a right to see, examine, and learn from those records. five years ago, president obama signed an executive order entitled classified national security information intended to overhaul the way documents created by the federal government are assigned classification codes. secret, top secret. the executive order also created the national declassification center within the national archives with the mandate to review for declassification some 400 million pages of classified records going back to world war i. and to do that by the end of 2013. we successfully met that goal in the declassification process, emphasizing a risk management strategy and expanding data capture efforts. and i'm proud to report that the six oldest documents were released. they are classified by the cia. they are just about his last day in office, leon panetta held a press conference announcing the release of these six documents. all formulas for secret inc. most rec

so, i appreciate the national governors association for what it stands for, and the significant role that governors play in our nation. one of the blessings of being the chair is i have the opportunity to have an initiative, and as john has mentioned, i am very concerned about what i see as a lack of balance -- a change that has occurred in our country over many years, where i think the role of the states in comparison to the role of the federal government is a little bit out of balance, and needs to be changed and improved. i know, as we look at some of the challenges that we see in our washington, d.c., government, and some of the dysfunctionality, i just want to let the people here know, and those that listen and watch, that the states are performing well. they are solving problems. they are addressing the people's so our initiative, "states --ve titled finding solutions and improving lives," i have a card i have given to the governors for anyone that wants to listen and learn about the initiative. for those of you here, we will have them available on the table as you go out. solut
