it was in a branch of the national archives i wonder if they have the personnel file. so i asked is it difficult to get personnel files. or privacy issues. as the archive while organized. well organized. who are you interested in. i was kind of interested in guist also. so i copied his file. would you like to have it. the personnel files can be very dull i've seen my personnel file at american university there is a lot of stuff about paperwork. i was not betting the farm. it turned out to be a very large file and a very interesting file first of all because they head with -- written some autobiographical things in it and secondly, because he had been investigated by the state department. so they look for people in the past and some of them have good things to say and some of them didn't. that is all the better for the historian. that was the first really big break it was at that point that i said i know might actually be able to do a book and a sense of him as a person. i will give you a bare bones version of what appears with detail. he was born in cleveland to parent

about two blocks from the national archives. close to capital one arena. she is right there and what is now known as the penn quarter neighborhood. those are the elements we are going to look at. the role of clara barton during the civil war and the history of the building in which she lived. the connection between barton in the space she lived is going to lead to the space being saved from destruction in the 1990's. i am lucky to be working in this space in downtown washington, a restored 19th-century boardinghouse. if it were not for the connections of clara barton, it is likely that structure would no longer exist. i will get into that story in just a bit. what i want to do first is go through a bit of the life of clara barton, the angel of the battlefield. we are going to look at her life from the beginning up to her time at the missing soldiers office in washington, d.c. the first 45 years of her life. if you are familiar with clara barton, you are most familiar with her work with the american red cross, which comes several decades after the civil war.
