earth, how much do we really know about the nativity story? is it a complete and true history? is some of it tradition? is any of it myth? we take you to israel and palestine to trace the remarkable story of jesus' birth. you'll see the spot in nazareth where word of a virgin birth first came to a teenage girl and a jaw-dropping view of this palace fortress of king herod, the demonic ruler who wanted to kill the newborn king. plus -- the road to bethlehem was long and dangerous for mary and joseph. but to understand who jesus is, we start where his life began. claire, where are we right now? >> well, we're standing in the little town of bethlehem, and you can already that the little town of bethlehem is now actually a vibrant and a thriving city. and we're at the heart of this city, which is where the city of jesus' day -- or actually the jewish village from jesus' time -- centered itself right here at manger square. >> this is so different from the song -- "oh, little town of bethlehem, how still we see thee lie." biblical scholar claire pfann

what that does to the osage is they now have competition. they have natives competing with them for access to game, access to trade goods, competing over the access to well-watered farmland. natives start moving into euro-americansee start moving into missouri. missouri gained statehood in 1821. the settlement quickly stretching into land that the osage are using, and that makes it harder for them to survive and be dominant in the way they long had been in that region. a littlen you talk bit more about that imperial status? what does that mean exactly? tai: this is of some scholarly debate because when we talk about empires or imperialism, our natural bodies the european method and eventually the american method, which is exploitive, acquiring because you deserve them and the people who have been do not. i think with natives, this is the argument that has been made with scholars with the comanche and other groups, is they were able to expand their power base in many ways on military might. they use that to create in some cases commercial empires where they co

but there was a lot of it that allowed the native people to survived the spanish. , the mexican era, and ultimately the american period. it was in 1846 through 1848 when the americans first entered monterey that the first governor of california, peter burnet, basically ordered the annihilation and extermination of the california indians. he actually put taxpayer money behind that effort to the extent that within 12 years, a population documented to have existed of 150,000 native people in california at american contact dwindled to less than 30,000. so over 120,000 people have been documented to have been killed during the period. that was truly genocide. i believe, based on anything i everything i have seen, including recent publications and one to come out next year, that essentially native peoples have conflated the atrocities of the early church with the shortfalls and the misgivings of the spanish colonial period and they blamed it all on father serra. i think has truly gotten a bum rap. the demonization and the hate speech associated with father serra is really and called for --
