the armed forces. can you explain how you end up serving a navy and the capacity that users? >> i was in school but a sort of put aside the time i graduated from high school, and i had gotten to the photography and i worked and as an administrator when somebody went on the occasion. i learned a lot of things but i decided my only option in the situation was to join the military if i'd wanted to get out and do something interesting, so one day i was down the post office and i was going to go see the recruiters and i spoke to him told him what i had in mind i'm going to quit high school and get out of town. he said don't quit high school. he said steve and i guarantee you will go to school. so i stayed the extra two or three months and graduated and went in the navy and the rest is history but did not choose a photographer which is the closest thing i could think of that i was doing on the outside and later become a diver. >> you talk about what people thought of the military services 1960's. can you explain how was viewed then and how you talk about it in your book? >> exactly

those lessons were evident tonight at the army/navy gala where supporters of each military branch mickngs of the -- mingled in friendly anticipation of the game tomorrow. >> my background is that my father, brother and sister served in the army and i'm the only one who joined the navy. i feel proud to root for the navy and it's always good to be rooting for the winning team. it's a way for me to poke fun fun at my family, but at the end of the day we're back on the same team. >> reporter: it's been nearly 10 years since harms won the game. some army supporters think -- army has won the game. some army supporters think this year is going to be different. >> it's obvious. i'm an army fan, always have been, always will be. they will win tomorrow. >> reporter: what makes you think that? >> because it's our turn. >> reporter: that, too is a good lesson for democrats and republicans. local politicians think the city is the winner in this game. >> it will be something millions of dollars in tax revenues that we'll get and again the tradition of having it here and when we build a new redskins

can you explain how you ended up serving in the navy in the capacity you served? >> i was interested in scuba diving but i put it aside by the time i graduated from high school. and i had gotten into photography and working at the newspaper and working in the dark room when somebody went on vacation. i learned a lot of things from that. but i decided my only option, due to my situation, was to join the military if i want to get out of rockland, maine, and do something interesting. one day i was at the post office where the recruiters were, and i was going to see the recruiters. the only one that was there was the navy recruiter. and i spoke to him for a while. real nice guy. and boatswain's first mate, allen is his name. i said i'm going quit shoal get out of town. he said, don't quit high school. stay in and i guarantee you'll get a school. i went, okay. so i stayed the extra two or three months, whatever it was, and graduated, and went into the navy and the rest is history. but i did choose to be a photographer's mate, which is kind of the closest thing i could
