a word about the title "navy crazy". i don't think the u.s. navy is crazy. i am simply describing that part of the navy's that fortunately or unfortunately the only part that i really came to know. this was a very strange and dangerous place, scary place and that is all i really experienced. i am somewhat grateful to the navy. i grew up in those two years. i think i was pretty nice event in some ways this book, a coming of age book, huckleberry finn etc.. kind of a coming of age book really. i was very naive when i got there. first story in the book, really, is an example of that. there was a kid i liked very much because he was interested in literature and wanted to be a writer and i wanted to be a brighter and we would talk all day when it was time i should say, to talk and what is he doing? there is nothing the matter with him. he is senior than i am. saner than the psychiatrist that we had that is for sure. so i approached the captain who was the head shrink and i said i think we have made of mistake. goldsmith there is nothing the matter with him. are y

the idea here was that, well, the royal navy was blockading many german harbors. the u-boats could be used to get out past the blockade and go far afield and sink vessels that were merchant ships that were carrying those supplies. and this was very, very effective. however, it was somewhat ineffective in that -- at least early on -- it was a somewhat gentlemanly way of fighting with a submarine. submarines predominantly are a very good offensive weapon but a very terrible defensive weapon so their success lies in their stealth, in their ability to have these kinds of surprise attacks. whether they first started this war on commerce, there was a lot of concern over it being sort of poking the beast of a lot of neutral nations. when they declared the areas around the british isle were a war zone and they'd sink vessels that weren't necessarily involved in the conflict but were simply carrying merchant cargo to places like the united states, south america, other places that weren't involved. so they wanted to try and mitigate the losses that they had in that. they obs

one of the interesting things is he was the editor for the navy rotc yearbook. you can see his name as editor on their letterhead. so he was not only doing electrical engineering, which was his major, but also involved in editing the yearbook. another couple of items here. his application for rotc. there are two of them, which people might be surprised at. the first when he was in high school, he was not accepted. they did not have a spot for him at purdue in the rotc program. he persisted and came to purdue and tried again. there is his second attempt at getting into the rotc, and he did. it is something he talks about, being successful means never giving up and always trying to achieve your goals. in this case, we have displayed some materials from neil armstrong's navy service record and photographs from when he was in the service. in his second year at purdue university, he was called to the korean war and to start naval aviator training. the photograph enlarged was taken at purdue university. we love that photograph because neil armstrong is on the left. it
