the u.s. economy. nbc'sate snow has an exclusive interview tonight beginning with the question -- how do we and how would he get americans back to work? >> there is no big one silver bullet. but the most important thing we could do is to try to loosen up the big stores of cash. there are about $2 trillion in bank reserves uncommitted to loans. that money won't be loaned until we accelerate the resolution of the home mortgage crisis. >> you say we need a simpler system to help people out of failed mortgages. are you saying the system we have at the federal level isn't cutting it now? >> it's helped people but not enough. to be fair to the white house, a lot of this is beyond their control. what i proposed is a much more rapid resolution of it. basically write down the ones you can write down. extend the terms on ones you can extend the terms. if the person still can't make the mortgage payments, offer them a five-year lease on the same home. let them pay rent. >> one of the themes of the book again and again

this as the university comes under pressure to launch its own investigation. nbc's kristen dahlgren has the latest developments. >> reporter: penn state football always had a quarterback issy clean reputation, led by college football's winningest coach, joe paterno. on campus today, the talk was of scandal. >> it defeats the program. we pride ourselves on being a clean program. >> reporter: former defensive coordinator jerry sandusky was rained this weekend on charges of sexually abusing eight boys as young as 10 years old between 1994 and 2009. the state attorney general called sandusky a sexual predator, who used his position within the university and community to repeatedly prey on young boys. meantime, the school's athletic director tim curley and gary schultz were charged with lying about what they knew. in the statement, the university's president said tim curley and gary schultz have my unconditional support and i have complete confidence in how they handled the allegations against sandusky. though he retired in 1999, sandusky used the university's facilities

where we see a generic matchup, republicans haven't settled on a candidate just yet, but the nbc pollerman cain are virtually tied as the front-runners while rick perry has taken a tumble and now ties newt gingrich for fifth. where are we at right now, chuck? >> i think where we're at, we still have the republican party split into two camps. your establishment business wing is gravitating towards mitt romney, and the tea party populist conservative sort of outsider part of the party gravitating towards anyone that's not mitt romney, and doubling down with cain, although this poll was taken before today's developments and the gloria allred part of the story. but what i would say is we're still in the same place we were. the party still split down the middle whether they're going to rally around the country club business wing of the party, which is what mitt romney represents, or the more conservative, populist wing that has given them all the energy. >> chris cillizza, today, we saw a vivid attack, basically, on the morality, basically, the character of herman cain. this wasn't a quest

two sources involved with the restaurant group at the time cain was ceo in the late '90s tell nbc the two women alleged he made unwanted advances or sexually suggestive comments. nbc news is not disclosing the names of the women. these sources say at least one woman received a financial settlement before leaving the organization. cain's denials today were carefully worded. each time denying sexual harassment. often used as a specific legal term that has to do with creating a hostile work environment. >> never have i committed any sort of sexual harassment. >> two anonymous sources claiming sexual harassment. >> reporter: he also did not deny there had been any settlements. >> as far as a settlement, i am unaware of any sort of settlement. i hope it wasn't for much because i didn't do anything. >> reporter: a few hours later, cain changed his story, telling fox there was some sort of settlement but it was small. the national restaurant association isn't talking, calling it a personnel matter that allegedly took place 15 years ago. the group also declined to confirm or deny cain's claim

perry took to twitter after the debate saying he, "stepped in it." nbc's steve handelsman has more.
