the first lady is here. mrs. obama is in town for a quick fund raising trip. nbc bay area's chase cane joins us in san francisco, tracking the first lady's visit. chase? >> reporter: well, raj, they have kept her visit secretive because this time they are focusing on the money. in fact, the first lady told a group of supporters that a fund-raiser last night in los angeles that they should, quote, write a big fat check. so no doubt she's sending a rather similar message to supporters here in san francisco. check is this out. people were lining up for hours outside waiting to catch a glimpse of the first lady. when the secret service got there, they rushed her right inside. last year she was much more publicly available. that really didn't matter to supporters of the first lady. at this hour she moved eight blocks or so down montgomery street to a round table with democratic supporter ls. about 200 supporters the there and for other people who weren't fortunate enough to make it to an event, when they heard the first lady was in town they dropped what they were doin

investigators believe most of the fires were deliberately set. nbc bay area's kimberly tere joins us from the scene of one of the fires with more on the investigation and a sketch of the possible suspect. >> reporter: diane, this is actually the sketch released by investigators today of a person of interest. it is based on witness descriptions, and also on images taken from surveillance video cameras in the areas where the fires were started. the most recent fire actually started this morning, just before 4:30 a.m. san jose firefighters say it was a jogger who alerted them to the fire, by banging on the door of their station, which is actually very close to the home which was on fire near the intersection of east st. john and 17th street. a couple in their 70s were inside the home. but firefighters say neighbors were able to alert them and they were able to get out safely. this is the latest of several fires in the area since wednesday, and firefighters say they believe the same person may be responsible. according to investigators, the fires have al

meanwhile, the state department warns people heading for sochi. nbc's kier simmons has more. >> reporter: president putin is determined these games will be a success. and today his press secretary said any reports that there are concerns about the gains is just the west trying to discredit russia. but the concerns include terrorism and today a group that claims to have been behind the deaths of at least 34 people in a double suicide bombing in a city 400 miles from here last month issued new threats. the new threats on the internet suggested that there would another attack. it did not mention sochi, but the same group has promised in the past to deliver what they said would be a present for president putin here at sochi during the games. the aim of the group must well have been to try to disrupt the games but the simple threat to the buildup to the olympics may have already done that, increasing the fear. that said, olympic organizers say the games are safe. and lester, when you speak to organizers on the ground here there is a sense of enthusiasm, perh
