the dg patch? the association said we would like to talk to you about parking issues in the neighborhood. when a neighborhood association comes to us and says we want to talk about parking issues we say yes. so we did that. i think that begs the question why were they concerned about parkings -- parking issues in the dog patch. i don't know if we can get the presentation up on the screen. so right now the number of people living in the dog patch and working in the dog patch and visiting the dog patch to the significant traffic generators over there far out numbers the total number of parking spaces on the street, that total number of parking spaces on the street isn't going to change at all. so we have a problem. what that doesn't consider is the fact that with 80% of the spaces currently unregulated there's people attracted to the neighborhood because of the free ugh regulated parking. they don't work there or spend money there. they are using it for free parking and taking up spaces from people who need them. so when you have lots and lots of demand you get the higher parking occupancy w

you saw via e-mail that the dog patch association did vote in favor of this plan. that shows that we have support from the neighborhood associations. also we made a lot of attempts to reach out to people who weren't necessarily plugged into the neighborhood associations. sent letters to all the addresses in the dog patch, an e-mail blast to anyone who expressed interest and tried to call that from other city agencies who were also doing work gathering their e-mail lists so we could make sure as many people heard about it. we had six open houses. some of them we put on ourselves. a lot of coverage in the city paper. lots and lots of meetings. i feel like the dog patch is my second home now. i've been in meetings just to inform people about the whole plan or their whole block trying to oblige as many people as possible. last month we got a lot of useful information at the public hearing that the director was kind enough to join us for. i think that you'll hear from some of the folk who is -- folks who we worked with. it's a challenge to please everybody. i don't know if we approved 100% on that score. that i think you'l

cities all over the state were saying don't step on my toes. a lot of neighborhood associations were really saying the sky is falling, this is going to put apartment buildings near single family homes. and we also had some groups, progressive groups, concerned about displacement which we tried to address in the bill. there was a lot of push back. then you have smaller cities in particular who don't want apartment buildings. for my colleagues, this was the first try. sometimes hard bills take a few years. i have a lot of colleagues who are sympathetic to the bill but the politics are hard. we will have to work through that. i think we can. >> i found it interesting also, that is the public part of it. the private part, i also saw say for example, housing advocates opposed because it would take away hearing processes and the ability to go in while you are trying to get approval for some building like this and say oh we'll give it to you but we want the developer to help this local nonprofit or we want certain union requirements in there for it. this would have taken a lot of that

we got our partners to the table, the school, the neighborhood business association, neighborhood association, juvenile probation, our police officers, we developed it was called high school disorderer reduction project, no the a fancy name but that initiative garnered us the -- basically received the policing award in 2011. that was a collective problem-solving process. there were issues around yeah, we needed to have additional patrol present, that was part of it, but the internal school environment and something that the school owned if you will and had the ability to influence. they had basically a lot of the conflict occurred during class exchange, after class got out, they had to go to another class, often in close proximity, people would bump into each other, i will see you after school. there was conflict built on the structure of the school itself. that was addressed where some students that were poorly matched to those educational environments, placed in better environments, bottom line an 80% reduction in assaults in a year and academic performance increased that year and each subs
