of the nevada caucus tonight. we have a first look at the entrance polls. that's what we call it on a caucus night. let's go to tamron hall with some numbers. >> reporter: chris, we have two groups of people that we're watching for tonight. a greater share of the caucusgoers are tea party supporters than we have seen this year. look at this number. 74% of today's caucusgoers say they support the tea parties. that compares to two-thirds of voters in the florida and south carolina primaries and in the iowa caucuses. of course, nevada is the first state in this year's republican contest. mitt romney is mormon. an interesting thing we want to highlight. more mormons than nonmormons will emphasize the importance of moral character. 32% for mormons and 15% for nonmormons. >> thanks, tamron. anthony terrell is in minnesota joined by ron paul. >> chris, i'm joined by dr. ron paul. dr. paul, early numbers coming in expected to get 25%. four years ago you got 14%. how is the increase going? >> i think it's doing well and hop

nevada. like all over the country but worse in nevada. ing everything unfold in washington. i know you're getting ready for the state of the union as well tomorrow as well. >> i am indeed. i had a chance to sit down tonight and talk to him about the flow of the campaign so far. one of the things i asked but b is one of the things you all have been talking about. we saw on friday, lowest unemployment rate in almost three years and the highest dow jones industrial average since before the recession. i put it to him point blank and said if this economy keeps going and is looking good in september, what is plan b for republicans who wanted to run on the economy? here's some of what he said. >> obviously we'll have to wait and see but i think we're pleased that things are ticking down and not up. but ultimately what this is about is about how people feel. it's about how people feel in america. >> consumer confidence. >> that's really what campaigning and politics is all about. number one, am i better off today than i was three or four years ago

the winner of the nevada caucuses. cnn projects that the former massachusetts governor has a decisive win in the caucuses in nevada. mitt romney going ahead, capitalizing only his dramatic win in florida, now capturing nevada, as well. we do not -- we do not yet know who's going to come in second or third. but there is a dramatic race under way for second and third place. but now you can see romney headquarters in las vegas. the crowd hearing the news that mitt romney has won the nevada caucuses. very, very excited. jim acosta is our man over at mitt romney headquarters in las vegas. jim, the crowd pretty excited there, as they should be. >> that's right, wolf. this is a very pumped up crowd and also a very big crowd. we talked over the last couple of weeks that mitt romney has, at times, had trouble drawing large crowds. that's not the case tonight. it's a very big crowd for the former massachusetts governor. we are expecting to see mitt romney address this crowd within the hour. it was thought he might come on in abou

nevada. he won in 2008. the actual mormon population in nevada while there is all of this talk about mormons in nevada it's pretty small about 9 percent, but about 26, 27 percent turnout for the caucuses. gets a lot of that support there. he was predicted to do well. is it a knockout punch? no. the question for newt gingrich is about money and about continuing on to super tuesday. because his plan is to do very well in those super tuesday states with a specific southern strategy. if he can't get there because of money and he starts running into deficit spending that is always a bad thing for a candidate. >> you know, consistent with that poll lito says that there's an article that says the campaign is unravelling. is what you are hearing consistent with that? >> i talked to some senior advisors tonight. they are saying that this news conference at 11:00 p.m. eastern time will be laying the groundwork the pathway forward how they are going to go forward not only raising money but competing in all of these states.

the nevada g.o.p. s hoping that people would wait and we will, but we have been conducting entrance polls all day. and asking nevadaens on their way into the caucuses how do they intend to vote and why. now, voters could change their minds once inside. you see, these are caucuses and an important caveat. they could be persuaded by a speech, by a neighbor or a surrogate based on what happens inside each one of those sites and you have to consider that when you take a look at the polls. keep that in mind. nearly half of nevada caucus voters today said they're very conservative and half of them are going for mitt romney. one in four for newt gingrich and 15% for ron paul and rick santorum 10% of the vote. but look at this, ron paul and newt gingrich do well among the nevada republicans who say being a you true conservative is the most important quality and romney comes in dead last in that group. more in four of ten nevada voters say they strongly support the tea party movement, an area a strong suit for n

he didn't get that, we don't think, in the state of nevada. know that yet. >> reporter: his message on social issues resonates so well. interesting, he was up in minnesota a few days, and the spot he chose to kick off the campaign is about ten miles from northwest iowa. he ended up so well on caucus night. ever since then theres been that fevor around him, and it'sen an achilles' heel. >> what kind of arm twisting do you think is going on between former speaker gingrich and santorum in terms of one or the other bailing. >> behind the scenes some of the santorum advisers are saying, we're going to wait this out. newt gingrich has a history of being a time bomb. he can at any moment say something that could put him in trouble with the republican base. so we're playing a waiting game. whether you're looking a at the functionally or a delegate countwise. >>> andrew rafferty, thank you for your report. what's bringing caucus voters out to vote tonight? what's driving them? what issues are driving nevada's republican electorate? >>> joining us on the

in the east. 7:00 p.m. in nevada. the doors to the final caucus are closed. mitt romney has won the nevada caucuses he wins by significant margin. newt gingrich and ron paul batting now for second place. rick santorum will finish fourth. let's bring in political director chuck todd. this was predicted, strong more m mormon support. this race for second interesting. >> it is. half the votes going to come in, half the total vote is going to come in from clark county, las vegas. going to start coming in. you will see romney's numbers. we saw this in our exit poll. romney overperformed in our entrance polls, excuse me, in clark county. and, got some where close to -- even 60% of the vote. our estimation. in clark county. that's where he is going to get his win. get over the 50% mark. maybe do better than he did four years ago. as for paul, remember he did finish second four years ago. his numbers substantially higher. it is a close race between paul and gingrich. paul, very organized in the rural counties. where he has been looking good in early returns we have s

libertarians are very big in the nevada political scene. and that's why i think some of the themes are much different here. and when you're talking about the west, immigration, a huge issue. we've heard newt gingrich pound heavily on this today. and he's been very much more aggressive than he was in new hampshire and elsewhere. today he just went after romney as obama-lite and said he didn't have really the values. and he didn't have the campaign. he was too prone to gaffes. this is the kind of thing that we're seeing a real all-out fight here in nevada for these caucuses. and i think it's going to impact as we go forward, june in california, we'll see if newt gingrich and ron paul and even rick santorum can keep this then going all the way till june and maybe california. that's what some republicans are saying they want to see happen here. >> carla, can i ask, what have some of mitt romney's issues been in nevada? he got a trump endorsement and that was probably a little uncomfortable or even embarrassing for him? >> that was one of the mor

designated as first in the west, why nevada? >> a couple things, they were -- as -- the west had been a place where democrats thought we could see some important gains, because we hadn't been doing as well in the south. when we made those changes to the primary calendar, the republican party essentially adopted the same changes. what we looked at, though, was high latino population, as chuck said it's very different demographic, that these are mostly of mexican descent who tend to be more democratic versus florida, which is a different mix. we also were looking at union density, which is the people who work on the strip. one of the things i note the for tonight, they aren't making any special accommodations for the waitresses, the folks who work along the strip. >> i remember that issue. >> where you had your i.d. you could come within a certain period of time, and they're not doing that. which obviously i suppose is because you don't expect there to be too many republican voters coming out of the strip. >> only after they've los

here is one of the latest polls out of nevada. you can see that mitt romney holds a double-digit lead over newt gingrich. cnn's joe johns has more on the final rush for support. >> reporter: susan, as the race for the nevada caucuses enters the homestretch, the mitt romney campaign was hoping their candidate was well positioned to score a victory here just like he did four years ago. it was a bizarre week in politics, though, with donald trump stirring up a publicity firestorm before finally publicly endorsing romney for president. romney did not help his own case with his comments on cnn that he was not concerned about the poor because there's a safety net for them. he later said he misspoke. meanwhile, newt gingrich, the former speaker of the house, tried to capitalize on the romney misstep promoting his own plans to create jobs and improve the economy. texas congressman ron paul was also attracting large crowds in the state of nevada with his anti-war smaller government message. he actually placed second here four years ago behi
