high school is in a viral internet presence and law enforcement chatter and onto the cover of the "new york post." to be clear, the impossible poor judgment of the editors of the "new york post" was not the only reason this kid's picture was in the world associated with the bombing. what i saw on the front page of the post was not the first time i've seen this particular picture. the reason i saw it before was because i fell down a rabbit hole at 11:00 and browsing a page in which internet users had come together to do the vigilante work of sifting through the publicly available pictures of the marathon. it struck me sitting in the cold nightlight of my laptop we have so many images of this event everyone was turning over to authorities and that would be our salvation. or provisionally was. here i was staring at what the dark underbelly looks like. the images are not only possessed by police but also property of people sharing them and why this kid who was watching twatc watching the marathon had to clear his name with the authorities. it's not lost by the fbi as they try to find the actual perp

earlier that a twenty year old saudi man had been detained now was news that was according to the new york post but then police officers in and boston actually denied those claims is there any new information about that man in particular is that the man that's at the hospital being questioned that you know that's something that i cannot confirm and that's right we should remind our viewers if they were watching a few a few hours back that the new york post did did report twenty year old saudi national was being considered a suspect and being heavily guarded at a hospital a few hours after that report came out the boston police commissioner said that that is not true there is no suspect in. custody whatsoever nobody being held at a hospital but as far as i know as far as i last checked the new york post was still standing by the story and citing sources from boston for the facts so it's not clear who is telling the truth there you have to believe the police commissioner i would at least the new york post is standing by the story and we do not know if that is the same person that was mentioned in

the terror attack attacks in bostons been slow in coming. luckily, there is one news outlet that doesn't let lack of facts get in the way of reporting them. of course, that's the "new york post." today, they ran this cover story showing two men from the marathon crowd under the headline "bag men: feds seek these two pictured at boston marathon." so be on the lookout for these guys. ( laughter ) and while you're on the lookout for these guys, keep in mind, these are not the guys. ( laughter ). turns out, it was these other guys. >> we are releasing photos of these two suspects. they are identified as suspect 1 and suspect 2. somebody out there knows these individuals as friends, neighbors, coworkers or family members of the suspects. >> stephen: you heard him. if you know either of these individuals-- perhaps as friends, perhaps as coworkers, or maybe you went to high school with someone named suspect 1 or suspect 2, go to bostonmarathontips.fbi.gov. and speaking of tips, quick tip of the hat to the "new york post" for accusing these two innocent men of a horrible crime because anyone can print accurate information. but the "post" always follows the four ws of journalism, who

the fact-checking process traditionally performed by good news gathering organization. which, in the case of yesterday's horrific attack at the boston marathon meant quite a few erroneous reports. the "new york post" was reporting "12 dead, nearly 50 injured." this at a time when the rest of the media was reporting the death toll at 2 and the post kept its headline up well into the evening. in another case of unconfirmed information, "wall street journal" breaking news owned by the same company as the post, you know who tweeted officials found what they believe are five additional undetonated explosive devices in the boston area. they later corrected themselves when this, too turned out to be not true. for more on this, i'm joined by eric boehlert and democratic strategist and director of american value institute alexis mcgill johnson. great to have you both here. i appreciate your brilliance on such a sad occasion. there are great things about twitter and social media as far as social services and getting information out to family. do you think yesterday was helped or hindered by the frenzy of social media? alexis? >> i think that what happens in social media is that it is reflecting a lot of co

that looks like it was written by the new york post editor. ks like it was written on company letterhead. it says, dear readers, it is with great regret that i reflect on the new york post's reporting and decisions after the marathon bombing. they consistently reported on the tragic incident that at least were ill-informed and speculative and at least intentionally misleading and harmful to those involved. the letter then explains what the post got wrong on the death toll and the supposed saudi subject. it apologizes for each of them in turn. then it said, this week the post has acted recklessly for good journalism. i would like to sincerely apologize to our readers, to the people of boston and the three men who were mistakenly identified as suspects. it's fake. they bought up copies of the paper, inserted the fake letter into the paper and distributed them around new york, including at the paper's headquarters. the saving souls by proxy of new york readers everywhere and possibly giving the people who own that paper a glimpse of what might be,

the f.b.i. and law enforcement looking for a dark skinned individual, the posting of two photos, quote, bad men as the "new york post" pointed out and it turned out to be innocent people. there was a terrible story of a 17-year-old student that was listed as a suspect. there was a lot to apologize for. >> jon: kathleen carol of associated press said this. we took a shellacking for reporting that a suspect was in custody, when as the hours passed, that information begin to look wobbly. how does something like that happen? >> because there is a rush. there is a rush to somebody get it first and get it right. that was philip schwartz said that. the "washington post" said ap used only one anonymous source. i do have to saying read all week the boston globe has done an amazing job this week. >> jon: then chris matthews, he took some heat, in the bombings on right wing home-grown militia types. they put together a cartoon as a result of chris math use. >> as kid we had a party game. birthday party, pin the tail on the donkey. people like chris matthew want to pin the blame on something like this on right wing extremi

time and time again and this regurgitation is going on twenty four seven like this story from the new york post which reported within hours of the bombing that a saudi man was in custody and of course every mainstream outlet ran with the story just like they did today when for the billion the time when yet another breaking news story emerged across the mainstream that there's a new suspect under arrest check it out. one of the sources is a boston law enforcement source who tells me that an arrest has been made in the investigation which identified has now been arrested fox news alert and now it is being told to fox news to a fox news reporter that indeed an arrest has been made so what you're hearing from three separate sources is that no arrest and they do not know the identity of the person what do they have where we just don't know what the cases and i told the viewers from the beginning we're going to try to be transparent about the. mission coming in and how many sources we had on it where was coming from and that's what we've done now we find ourselves at two twenty seven pm eastern time
