cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is in the newsroom with more on the impending decision. hi, anne. >> reporter: it was controversial. the cpuc deciding who would pay what for pipeline improvements. pg&e or customers. it turns out both parties will be paying and rates will increase in the aftermath of the deadly san bruno pipeline blast and fire on september 9, 2010, which killed 8 people, injured 66 and destroyed dozens of homes of. the cpuc is ruling on pg&e's enhanced safety guidelines today a plan to improve its pipeline infrastructure. the repairs will cost over $2 billion and require pg&e to test hundreds of miles of pipeline, replace old pipe segments and automate safety valves. the cpuc says of the $2 billion needed for the work, ratepayers will pay $299 million. the mayor of san bruno and several utility watchdog groups say pg&e will be making a profit on this work. >> today you set a precedent. do you allow a utility responsible for the deaths of eight citizens, friends, and family, to profit as a direct result of that tragedy? >> commissioners, i urge you to app

cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in the newsroom with more. >>> reporter: cbs news spoke with people who knew adam lanza. one person claimed lanza's mother gave him an odd warning about her son. now, a man who baby sat for the family when adam was about 10 said nancy lanza told him to supervise her son at all times and never turn his back on him. former classmates remember the gunman as bright but painfully awkward. lanza was taking classes at western connecticut state university at the same time he was in high school. but he was also homeschooled by his mother, who told friends he had asperger's syndrome. >> i know he was on medication and everything. she was you know -- but she homeschooled him at home because he couldn't be able to school classes sometimes so she just homeschooled him at home and that was her life. >> recently investigators found out lanza fired guns at shooting ranges over the past several years but did not find evidence that he was at any ranges prior to last week's rampage. authorities say lanza had no criminal history and it's not clear whether he had a job. repor

defees is in the newsroom -- denise is in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: they say 30-year- old brian dargon is going to be charged with attempted murder. a nurse noticed he had a syringe in his clothes. the officer guarding him tried to get it away. and the two struggled. and the officer's gun discharged, hitting the emergency room wall. now, that officer used pepper spray to try to get dargon back into custody but was only able to do so when backup officers arrived. dargon was in custody for a burglary charge at the time of this incidence. kai? >> the officer's leg was grazed when her weapon went off. she did not need medical treatment. >> well, 1,000 guns. baltimore police have removed that significant number from city streets. investigator mike hellgren breaks down the statistics and what it all means. >> reporter: there has been a barrage of stories about gun violence in this city, involving gangs and drugs and the number of murders this year has already surpassed that of last year. so the mayor and the commissioner really wanted to make note of this gun arrest. >> reporter
