"today in the bay's" marla tellez live in newsroom. e crews say it's possible the death toll could go higher. >> we have a lot of new information coming into our newsroom. first off, the u.s. embassy in madrid confirms at least five americans are among the injured, the extent of their injuries is not known yet. what we've just learned is of the 141 people who are hurt, 36 are in critical condition, four of them are children. within the past couple hours, the security cam video was released showing the crash itself as the train tries to pass underneath an overpass and around the bend. spanish officials confirmed the speed limit in this area is 50 miles per hour. at least two spanish media outlets are reporting the train was traveling closer to 120 miles per hour, so more than twice the limit. all this information will be vital as investigators work to determine an exact cause. here is a look at the map. the train left madrid bound for the city of ferrol in northwestern region, crashed about 60 miles shy on the eve of a major religious ce

our team coverage continues with kpix 5's cate caugiran in the newsroom. but first, kpix 5 reporter anne makovec has the latest on the investigation from burlingame. anne. >> reporter: that questionable piece of the plane's machinery that you mentioned was the auto throttle. that's where a lot of the investigation is focused this morning and you can see the wreckage remains here on the runway at sfo. they are gathering up a little debris here on the runway and organizing it in those containers. it's going to be here for several more days. pilot error or mechanical failure that is a question this morning. again focused on that auto throttle which is the automatic speed control. we know the plane came in low and slow on saturday morning. it wasn't maintaining speed like a cruise control according to the flying instructor supervising the flying pilot. the pilot attempted to aboard the landing a second and a half before the landing. then it hit the seawall skidded and flipped down the runway. the ntsb says the auto throttle was armed but they cannot say yet if

just into the newsroom. that kind of shows as flight 214 came in for its landing. boeing 777 cleared to land. runway, 28 l. telling you all afternoon. after touching down, passengers felt the bump, tail hit the back of the plane. a fire started soon afterward. understanding it may have happened on one of the engines. then the plane, came to sit at the left of the runway. passengers started to come out of the chutes. steven when you see this animation from what you have been hearing and what you have been able to piece together. what strikes you? >> again, i think the -- the missing of the runway. i think that. evidence is clear. not an ntsb investigator. that's what they're looking. what they're going to be looking at. the black box. voice recorder. data recorder are going to show precisely what the glide path was for that airplane. and you can see -- the evidence, there is the glide path right there. this its the one that happened today. and, you can see it landing, or touching down, or almost touching down, just there goes there, right there. short of the runway.

i mean he is a really smart guy, and he sort of assessed the divanamics in the newsroom.here was already some tension in the newsroom. >> yeah. >> there was a lot of broken-down communication chains going on the news room. and he was able to manipulate those as well to his advantage. >> what did we learn about the way the "times" handled this? the fact that he was kept on, a lot of people attribute it to the fact that the "times" was very sensitive towards keeping minorities in the newsroom, hiring more minorities. so how much did his race have to do with it in and how much did he let down black reporters, if at all, because of what happened? >> you know it's hard for me to answer the question how much did his race have to do with it. you know, how i would answer that like on a numerical scale, i don't know. >> of course. but is it talked about? >> in the film, we address that issue. really what we try to focus on in the film is the coverage and how a lot of the coverage really focused on race, when from my opinion, based upon looking at the story for seven years, his rac
