we have a spare the air alert for poor air quality north bay, the coast, inland, moderate in the south central bay and the santa clara valleys. we are looking at the air quality to bring hazy conditions. up in north bay, 50 degrees, 15% relative humidity. gusts up to 9 miles per hour. a bit better here, the air is still really dry. take a look at the air quality today. we start out with a lot of smoke in the north bay. it builds. 1:00 in the afternoon. >> sunny skies throughout the rest of the bay area, but nothing like we're seeing here. you can see the smoke moving into the sacramento valley, out through the delta. this is 11:00 tonight. so certainly some issues in the north bay, but elsewhere air quality is moderate. here we are tuesday in the afternoon, this is when we get our wind shift. looking at more northeasterly winds. look what happens to the smoke. it's being pushed more off the coast. the winds out of the north and east. the good news is they'll dial back. we're in the 50s. cool start with not a lot of moisture in the area. we'll see chilly overnight lows tonight into tues

this map shows the current outages, most in the north bay. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall, tracking all the winds for us. >> we've seen some of the top wind gusts in the higher elevations in the north bay, reaching over 50 miles per hour with the highest in mt. st. helena reaching 57 miles per hour. mt. tam is the about 28. mt. diablo wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. but then in some of the valleys we've seen the wind gusts a lot lower and even at the altamont pass we've only seen wind gusts up to about 16. we have red flag warning and high fire danger continuing until 4:00 today as winds look breezy higher up. we were' not going to see any more gusty winds in the lower elevations, and then going into the east bay, the santa cruz mountains, we also have a red flag warning that continues today, until 4:00. i'll take to you an hour-by-hour forecast looking at the fire danger area and that's coming up in about a couple of minutes. mike, you have a couple of fires reported. >> a big concern any time any fire is reported. the chp re

so right now we're in the north bay. there's highway one oh one over to the right hand side an hour of moving them out to the west of one oh one you see portions of highway 12, one 16 all all of that highlighted in in purple. those folks you will be impacted by the next round of power shut off so keep that in mind. 600,000 customers pg customers without power and that leaves a lot of families in the dark. one of the issues is that only will they shut off power our but it's going to take some time to get the power back on so they shut it off not like they can just flip a switch and turn everything right back on instantly. they have to check for downed trees. they have to survey the entire bay area look for downed power. lines and then they'll slowly turn that power back on that could take up to a week is a big concern right now are over highway 12 still in the north bay just moving the map around so take a look at it see if you can find your particular neighborhood on the map. this is affecting one 0.5 million people. but

>>winds gusting as high as 60 miles per hour in some portions of the north bay today that could result in severe damage to power lines why we are seeing the potential of power outages, especially for thofoun the north bay and then he sort of fire that sparks can spread rapidly with dry tinder and winds as strong as they are about to let's take a look at these red flag warnings really quick because it really doesn't compass most of the bay area besides a few spots just right on the ay portions of the peninsula, especially above 1000 feet more exposed to those high winds and of course where we do see some of that dry tender under red flag warnings inland valleys and mountains and the east bay also looking at red flag warnings stretching as far out towards the coast as richmond on up towards ville a all across the north bay red flag warnings also taking effect starting at noon today and lasting through the afternoon. now peak winds will be felt late afternoon on into the evening tonight into early tomorrow and especially for the north bay this could be problematic. a lot of eyes on sonoma

the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive. the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza but all of the activity and focus continues to be in the north bay for those concerned. back to you. >> all right. there's concern about the northern end of the kincade wildfire advancing further into lake county. >> residents are in a holding pattern waiting to see whether they have to eevacuate. pete suratos is live in middletown. >> reporter: good morning to you. the big concern was possibility of wind blowing embers from the kincade fire to the eastern area in middletown. not much wind right now but pretty cold. i want to show you in the distance that's the fire burning, very far in the deep terrain. that is the concern over there. not much of a wind factor. we'll see if that changes throughout the day. i want to show you video from calistoga, southeast of highway 128, that's the area where folks have been as far as covering this kincade fire. that video you have flying embers from the kincade fire burning down this learning center in the calistoga area and that's pretty much the concern for crews, keeping an eye on the winds, it can shift th

while the rest of the bay area is fairly calm, going through the rest of the day, the winds will continue to increase from the north at about 25 to 30 miles per hour. you see the bright colors mostly in the north bay, and so that's where we will have some of those higher peaks. the red flag warning is including in the areas above 1,000 feet, bay area hills where the winds will be gusting the highest and as we go throughout the day, it's also going to start to get a little bit more windy, even in spots like san francisco, with winds coming in from the northeast at 25 miles per hour, and then also for some of our valleys, san jose at about 15 to 20 miles per hour into the evening. pg&e posts on their website when they expect the potential that they will start to ease off on those shutdowns, they call it public safety power shutoff potential and it includes today as well as tomorrow, possibly on friday as well, so they're not going to turn it back on until the threat is over. vianey, how many people are affected by the power outages? >> we're directing everyone to the pg&e website -- this is affecting thousands of peo

will see the strongest wind with the peak hitting at about 60 miles- per-hour, especially over the north bay and it doesn't only include the hills, it's the north bay valley locations, east bay owned along the san francisco and san mateo coastline. looking at the next 24 hours, notice we have darker shades of yellow and orange over the area right now on the eastern edge and if i stop it for you at about 7:00 or so, now, we've got red and purple indicating stronger winds moving in with the wind more widespread and the whole entire area is color-coded at that point. at 9:00, the wind is 43 miles- per-hour and and cloverdale and geyserville and windsor, the hills are expected to hit 50 or 60. at midnight, the winds are no better and could be worse and into the overnight hours, not much changes at 4:00 a.m. a better trained by 7:00 and by 10:00, they are out of there. hopefully not too much trouble but that's what we are looking at right now with the wind blowing through tomorrow morning and the advisory goes until 4:00 in the afternoon and we will track that for you with the air quality and in

most of it has been over the north bay. see it spreading out yesterday and providing some poor air quality from the kincade fire that's been really choking out parts of the bay area. as we get a closer look at the outline of the fire, we can see the fire perimeter and where we're expecting this fire to spread going into the next couple of days due to a gusty northerly wind. it looks like the fires and the embers could spread further to the south. we'll be watching for that as we go throughout the day. let's go through our timeline of the wind speed forecast. we will see winds increasing this morning in the north bay, northeasterly winds at about 20 to 30 miles per hour. getting even higher later today. later this evening we're going to see in napa, wind speeds of about 34. where we see the bright colors, that shows for higher elevations there could be higher gusts. going into tonight, as well as early tomorrow, we will start to see the winds shifting, that could also change the direction of any fires that develop especially

and extreme fire conditions, wind advisories have been issued for parts of the bay the east bay hill, the diablo range the north bay into the delta and parts of marine county is we're expecting some strong gusty winds, 45 maybe 55 miles per hour in some of those gusts go to work their way all the way down into the valleys. right here's a fire weather map. this is showing where we expect the worst fire conditions to be in the bay area as we take you through time here as we head through the night tonight, the focus is really in the north bay, certainly if fire gets started anywhere else in the bay area can spread rapidly but these are the worst conditions are going to see that as we head early into tomorrow morning, 00:45am in the morning and see that big bull's eye right there in red very extreme fire conditions there also near napa you phil saint helene a kind of between, but then as we take you through the night you see it really doesn't change a whole lot into early tomorrow morning so really after midnight we're going to see much of the north bay in extreme fire conditions that will finally begin to ease up

the impact of the power outages is already seen in the north bay. >> a live look across the bay the entire bay has lost power in some places. pg&e's controlled outages are to blame. >> pg&e is saying this is the way to reduce fire risk with much of the bay area in a red flag warning. outages started a little after midnight in the north bay and more outages are expected to roll out later today with phase two. it could amount to 800,000 homes and businesses without power. there's no real sense of how long the power may be out. >> that means if pg&e shuts off your power, it could be a full day, several days in fact before you get it back. what can can you do while the lights are still on? >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us with another step of trying to be prepared, kris. >> reporter: right, and you heard us harp on preparedness for earthquakes. if you are ready for an earthquake, then you should be ready for a power outage because a lot of the supplies are about the same as what you might need if you lose power. pg&e says if it shuts off power t could take several days for them to

over here in the east bay, we were slow off the castro valley area, 238 north and southbound 880. these are typical patches of slowing. at 5:52, it's a little late for that to start cropping up. a lighter volume around most of the bay. just over 25 minutes now, almost a half hour with slowing typical spot for vasco southbound. over here yesterday we had some signals out. a community out in the area around marsh creek. that caused quite a problem for the afternoon commute getting back north. southbound this morning does show a typical pattern as you narrow it down to one lane. 580 moving smoothly out of the altamont. in problems for the walnut creek interchange, a little slowing approaching the carquinez bridge. north bay, life disrupted here. windsor, healdsburg, guerneville, all these towns, we have 128 still closed with many patches of on and off-ramps closed as well throughout the area. >>> happening now, seven years ago today super storm sandy slammed into the northeast. it was one of the deadliest and most destructive hurricanes that season killing 150 people and causing $65 b

let's talk about the wind for the east bay in south bay. i focused on the norththe top of the newscast. that is where the real concerns come in. if you're in the east bay or south bay you could be in the red flag warning to. the necessary times here. wednesday morning at 1 am. even though we only have the gust to 16 or 20 for most locations. you notice it is breezy. it is not the howling winds we had sunday morning down where we live. if you look at the hills it is pretty rough. 50 mile-per-hour dust over mount diablo. 45 mile-per-hour gusts over the east bay hills. we have concerns there as well. that is mainly coming or the overnight hours. from tuesday night the worst of the winds pick up around 10 pm. they will continue to go pretty much through the morning until sunrise. on wednesday speaking of warnings and sunrises. this is how cold it will get tomorrow and santa rosa. three. 33 santa rosa. 42 san jose. those shelter valleys in the north bay where the cold air is just going to be able to settle. you don't have much of access as far is it. to the bay or inc

event where we have northeast winds developing over the city or nevada and elevated terrain in the north baycus of the winds looks like it will be mostly over the north bay, but we do expect some potentially dusty pockets of winds in the east bay and potentially into the south bay. we continue to monitor the latest weather forecast and observations to see if those winds materialize. we do also anticipate as the weather system drops south that another santa ana wi wievelopac southern d potentially into halloween. we are expecting that this sin an event will be the strongest of the season so far. those santa ana winds typically impact the attach a piece for the pg&e service area which is in the kern county area. however, the winds down south are going to be very serious. it is a very serious fire danger situation developing across southern california. i am concerned for southern california's down there with those conditions. at this time, we anticipate being able to recommend an all clear for areas across northern california impacted this weather event. by adm, tomorrow, potentially earlier fo
