former federal prosecutors from the northern district of california made the same point. they wrote, "judge chen consistently treats all sides evenly and impartially and conducts himself with the utmost propriety, as is fitting for a judge. while we are aware of his previous position as a staff attorney at the aclu in northern california ten years ago or more, judge chen does not show favoritism toward the parties or issues before him." the record is available. the evidence is in. chen understands the unique role of the impartial adjudicator. he knows what it means to decide cases evenhandedly and he has been doing it for ten years. let me turn to some speeches that the search engine turned up. since 2009, "the washington times" and others have used a handful of quotes from speeches chen has given during his time as a judge to try to paint him as someone he has no is not. as happens far too often, those cuts have been cut, spliced and taken out of context. let me give you an example. the effort to label chen as a radical is based on a speech he gave to students following

equalization says that sales tax revenues lost in the state of california is now $300 billion annually. we have been fighting desperate with the northern california independent booksellers association. we have been fighting this in california for 12 years. amazon have been collecting sales tax in the last decade at, let's say, $200 million a year. we would give them credit for not having sold so much 10 years ago. multiply that by 10 years and it is a lot of money. the advantage that amazon and the others have over all the businesses to sought in this room, and i want to get back to that, is basically a 10% price cap, 9.75%. off the bat, they get a 10% better deal. this book business, which is why we get involved -- i used to joke that amazon would soon disappear -- would soon be selling lawn furniture. you can buy a lawn furniture now from amazon. home depot told us the no. 1 seller of barbecues in the united states -- home depot -- amazon.com this is a huge competitive disadvantage for california businesses large and small. this is one place where wal- mart, target, and petco are on the same side with the small businesses. this is ab

i cover the northern california region. i usually focus on about $350 -- $350,000 of sbe loans. last year, for 2010, i did 43 loans. so we are lending. i usually focus on six different types of loans. start-ups, business acquisitions, real estate purchases with ti's, working capital, a partner buyouts, business expansion. when i am looking at a potential loan, i use the standard five c's of credit. the first one is character. what we are looking for is a minimum score around 640. we would like to say no recent bankruptcy foreclosures, bankruptcies, tax liens. if we see a loan that has been modified, we would like to see a reason it was modified, what ever reason it may be. it cannot be, i did not want to pay that payment any more. the second c, conditions. basically, how precise will the money be used? we are looking at a business plan. when you look at a business plan, that is just a start up. we are looking to see where there will be the need for lending. if you are an existing business, we want to see the money that we give you goes to the growth of your business. the third c

the northern spotted owl, it has killed the timber industry in much of the west and especially in northern california and oregon. northern spotted owl, that killed the timber industry in arizona and new mexico. the smelt, the small two-inch fish that lives in the san joaquin valley killed 27,000 jobs. the san joaquin valley was the source of 80% of our nation's vegetables. now those vegetables farms are gone. bankruptcy. we are now importing food from countries that can spray pesticides that are outlawed in this country. fewer jobs, bigger government, bigger -- greater cost of vegetables and less safe food supply. the grey wolf was listed by the fish and wildlife service as endangered and has killed agriculture and mining jobs throughout the west. still, the list goes on and on. so it's not that these are just hypothetical ideas that the war on western jobs is occurring by a government, these are ongoing processes. one group, they have declared they are going to list over 1,000 species this year that they are going to petition for the listing for over 1,000 species this year, understand their lawyers

. >> i would like to commend the department on earning the apa northern california award for the better streets plan. i thought that was excellent. and a number of things that have engaged in planning, so it seems. i have been involved in the san francisco presidio. at a meeting last friday, there was discussion on the impact of the presidio -- the impact of the america's cup on the presidio. part of it evolved into a discussion of the f line into the presidio area, as well as impacting the national maritime museum, which is a separate national park service agency. that was interesting because that conversation stated they are going to try to rush ahead as fast as possible and not have their construction impact america's cup. however, at aspur meeting this week, the america's cup came up, the statement was made, there is no way they are going to do it because it will impact america's cup, so it will happen later. so someone needs to get their comments together on this. i think it is very much in -- up in the air. i am hearing from various people who are supposedly authoritative, in the
