a fresh look at the city. oaklands clearly recently named by "forbes" teh fift -- the fifth coolest city in the country. i like that when the most. this friday, we will have part murmur. you will see to thousand or 3000 mostly young people on the streets of downtown oakland going to art galleries, listening to music, eating grilled cheese sandwiches from our outdoor night market restaurant strip on 23rd. it is an interesting and amazing place. not the oakland you may see in the news or the oakland you may remember from your childhood and that a lot of ex-oaklanders may remember. oakland is the second most literate city in the nation, the city with the best weather -- sorry, sand francisco. -- sorry, san francisco. we are constantly being named as the most diverse city. that is, like, 129 languages spoken in our public schools. our latest group, the winner of our spelling contest is a young lady from nepal. oakland is a city that is constantly reinventing itself, whether it be in the end of the transcontinental railroa

not only the berkeley pd but the oakland pd. they had a bear cat out here from the oakland pd. they negotiated with the person inside who's name they are not giving. they didn't say what prompted the man being held up inside. they responded here around 7:30 last night because they had reports of shots fired. just a moment ago a member of the berkeley police department came out here and described what happened when they entered the house. >> we entered the house. we contacted one individual who we believe to be our subject. and upon contact he appeared to be suffering from a self- inflicted gunshot wound. >> reporter: if you take a look down the street you can see yellow tape off around the distance wrapped around the tree. that is possibly the house. they have not pointed it out to us. berkeley police believe that the person inside the house had a self-inflicted gunshot wound and that's the cause of death. they were called outs here with reports of shots fired. we are not sure the motive of the shots being fired or identity of the person's who's body was found. >>> this morning

this is his first season here with the oakland a's. he'll be living in the bay area, but in the offseason, he lives in tokyo. needless to say, very emotional today concerned about his friends and family overseas and their safety. will they are okay. however, matsui such an inspiration and role model from the bay area to new york and all the way back to japan. a lot of people interested in what he has to say and including the japanese reporters that follow him every step of the way every day. but like we said, not baseball the topic today. it was all about what's going on back home for them. said he's been watching television all morning long trying to get some reports. here is matsui along with his translator. >> translator: certainly relieving to know that there is that kind of support, but my prayers are -- i just pray that all the people there that's been affected are safe and hopefully they're okay. >> reporter: matsui thrilled about the support from around the world and around the country and even around the bay area that he's hear
