's tara moriarty is live in downtown oakland this morning to tell us about one pretty brutal attack. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. the splinter groups broke off from the main protest and ended up coming here to the men's warehouse on telegraph and broadway. it's boarded up and behind it, some shattered glass there that folded over and crumpled. we're also learning about one brutal attack last night at the flora restaurant. a group of young men confronted it a waiter at the restaurant and struck him with a hammer. s about owners have been frustrated by protests like last night for a very long time now. >> windows and cleaning up the walls. it's a mess. >> reporter: now, we drove around this morning and we noticed that a bank had its windows smashed. at least three other businesses, including a cell phone store and bank had their windows boarded up to prevent damage. we hope to get damage estimates later this morning. so far we don't see any mention of another protest. w

the meeting was in oakland at the caltran building. the bart board of directors meeting was testy yesterday. the head of the union told the board that employees are prepared for the long of the strike since the three-month walk out in 1979. bart workers are threatening to strike again august 4 when an extension of the current agreement ends if they do not have a new contract. happening today, the movie based on the fatal shooting of an unarmed bart passenger of oscar grant and shows his last 24 hours before being shot by former bart police officer. the bart chief sat down with film maker and oakland native and said the goal was not to open old wounds but to let people know that there was more to oscar grant. >> anything that he could do, anything that we can do to help and assist in that healing process of the bay area, for the family, i think we all owe it to the grant family and ourselves to learn what happened so we can move forward and prevent it from happening again. >> the chief says the department is a taking huge steps to chang

the oakland police department and c.h.p. officers break up the crud and at that point it moved to downtown oakland and people continued to march around the downtown and police say some ones were smashed, graffitis with sprayed on businesses and people threw bottles at police officers and set shawl fires. the protest was to make a state about the verdict against george zimmerman and he was found not guilty in the killing of trayvon martin. this was the third day of protests here in oakland. police arrested nine people last night including a juvenile and say most of those arrested have addresses outside of oakland. police are asking anyone with video of people committing crimes to please hand it over to the oakland police department. the profits turn violent in los angeles, as well, with 13 people face charges. 150 people broke off from a larger group and started attacking cars and businesses. a news crew was assaulted. authorities say 300 officers were called in. >> george zimmerman's parents tell abc7 news barbara walters in

we begin the news this morning with an update out of the east bay. oakland police are promising business owners they will take action against protestors who vandalized store fronts this week over the george zimmerman verdict. yesterday the alameda county d-a's office filed charges against three of the nine people arrested monday night. in a news conference, interim police chief sean whent says the recent wave of violence is unacceptable. he says his department is stepping up its efforts to hold demonstrators accountable. the chief also says he will increase the number of officers covering any future protest. mayor jean quan was with the chief at that news conference. she thanked the community for providing information that helped catch the people responsible for some of the vandalism. oakland police have released new video and photos of some of the vandals, in hopes the public can help in identifying them. you can see in this video a man on a bike kicking and denting a car. other photos show people trying to break the windows of businesses in the downtown ar

>>mark:a teenage volunteer at the oakland zoo is being treated this morning for rabies. more from the zoo. >>will: here's what you need to know if you plan on taking your family to the oakland zoo today. he should not have any problems. this a bat was not part of their exhibit. eight came from the wild thing you could see all of the vegetation around here. the volunteer spotted the bat on saturday near the outer exhibits but instead of letting the zookeeper know immediately, she picks up this bat which apparently is very small and tries to walking over to the zoo keeper. in the process, she gets beaten in the hand. they immediately give her medication before they even conducted tests on the bat. those tests came back positive for the bat having rabies. if you happen to see a bat out and the wild, the zoo's as don't mess with it, leave it alone and also let them know. they will come out and take care of the matter. in this situation, the mistake was she did not what is to caper who knows how to handle this bat take care of this situation before she got her hands on this b

developing news in the search for this oakland toddler daphne web. she has been missing for two days and police say time is of the essence. the girl's father says she was taken from his suv in oakland on wednesday. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is along the shoreline in oakland and it's one of the places being searched for the toddler. cate. >> reporter: oakland's marine unit combed through the area yesterday. unfortunately, that search turned up nothing. that robot came up empty and now time is ticking. as you mentioned, it's day 2 and still no sign of 21-month- old daphne webb. investigators were out searching this waterfront area because police say it was where the father and daughter liked to come. webb is facing felony child endangerment charges for leaving his daughter in his suv wednesday with his mother who suffers from dementia. he is still not a suspect but it seems investigators are zeroing in on webb. >> it's important it balance the missing person and the kidnapping at the same time leaving the focus open for if there should be foul play.

chaos gripped the streets of oakland in the wake of the zimmerman verdict. last night the oakland city council demanded to know why the chief didn't see it coming. the chief chalked it up to an intelligence failure. he said police expected a big protest sunday, the day after the verdict. and they put a plan in effect for that. they did not anticipate violence saturday the 13th. then again monday officers seem behind sided when protesters marched onto i80. a protester with a hammer attacked a waiter. we know officers are ramping up everts to monitor social media better. the chief says they don't want protesters to take over the city again, causing damage to businesses and hurting innocent bystanders like the last time. i'm tara moriarty, channel 2 news. >>> some preschool students are the unintended victims of the violent protests. children who normally go to the alice street learning center now have to travel across town to attend classes. protesters broke windows forcing their regular school to close. parents say the protesters did not consider how their ac
