the deadly oakland warehouse fire back in december raised a lot of concerns about fire inspections, are there enough inspectors to get to the hundreds of buildings a year, is a real issue that oakland and other cities are trying to address, including alameda. doug long is the fire chief there, thank you for joining me. >> thank you for having me. >> you had a fire prevention bureau seven years ago, what happened? >> due to the downturn in the economy, we had to make budget cuts. so we lost the fire prevention bureau and the staff that conducts the fire inspections. >> what was the bureau's main job? >> to go out and do fire inspections and permit inspections for events and new construction, followup on complaints. so it was more or less gutted. >> it sounds like it. does that mean that there is a backlog in the city of alameda. >> right now we have 1600 commercial inspections and 30 residents inspections. in 2016, the commercial inspections were 21%, the residential inspections were 35%, we have a big backlog. >> when you think about all of those uninspecteddables and you look at what happened in oakland, that has to make you concerned. >> yes, we are askinged could something like that happen here.
