the bay area's economy afloat. more federal funding was announced just today on a project to keep the port of oakland competitive. ob roth is live now to tell us the additional money also means job security for some. >> reporter: the shipping channels here at the oakland port must be at least 50 feet deep so those big container ships can come through. but keeping those waters need constant work and a boat load of money. two years ago the port of oakland dug deep, deep in the harbor from 42 feet to 50 feet by dredging. today congresswoman barbara lee announced she secured $550 million in funds for the dredging project and to maintain the 50-foot depth. >> with the deeper harbor we can now accommodate newer and larger container ships carrying crucial ships between the united states and other countries. >> reporter: maintaining the depth is a constant battle, sometime like being at the beach, when you fill a hole it digs back up. so you have to keep digging or dredging to maintain the proper depth. nearly 200,000 container ships come through oakland every year. it supplies 70,000 jobs in the bay area. jim riley has o
