ocean city, maryland. a mock rescue of someone who's been slammed to the ground by a wav wave. >> wet sand is no more forgiving than concrete. >> reporter: butch arbin is captain of the ocean city beachon his lifeguards handle more than 100 rescues of swimmers that have hit the ocean floor. >> the problem with these types of injuries they happen in a split second. >> reporter: josh basile was paralyzed from the shoulders down after being thrown by a wave. >> i was in waist-high water and a wave came by and picked me up and dropped me on my head. >> did you know instantly something was wrong? >> i didn't have pain but when i started to turn i couldn't. >> reporter: jsh's accident happened in something called "shore break." when waves break abruptly into shallow water, slamming swimmers into the hard sand. the united states life saving association calls shore break an international problem, causing debilitating injuries, even death. sandy beach in hawaii is notorious for shore break. but experts say even small waves can be dangerous. the day we were taping our story in ocean city, a young girl was injured after being hit by a wave. lifeguards here use real-life rescues like this one to

the higher the dew point, the more monday the atmosphere. 75 on the beach at ocean city is. contrast that to the mountains three a nice and cool and dry out here. it is the boundary between the east and the west. that will continue through the early evening. 88 for the high at the airport. if you get the storm moving through, it can produce a lot of rain. a half inch of rain in a short time. tonight we have partly cloudy skies. a little fog may form. 68 degrees to 75. most of the summer, a cool front has swept through. now the front fed come rolling in from the into the bermuda high and stall, and with those funds trying to move in, you get thunderstorm activity each afternoon, and that is loyd to be the pattern for a couple more days. the next front is a little stronger. it will make a good hit on our area. from the coast to the mountains, the threat of a thunderstorm will be there. we will probably seek sunshine, but thunderstorms will develop thursday and friday, so the pattern will not change a lot. tamara is not quite as hot but still monday. a little more cloud cover.

so if you are heading to the beach this afternoon we should be in good shape. the area beaches, ocean city to lewes, delaware, low to middle 80s. the water temperature is 74 and the weather should be partly sunny. highs in the middle 80s to around 90. big cluster of storms passing through minneapolis. it will be in chicago later this afternoon toward this evening. other than that pretty quiet. over new england they are going to kick this rain up in to eastern canada and hopefully get drier weather up there. this front is off shore. that means most of our rain today if we get anything will be off shore. look for upper 80s this afternoon. this is the average high temperature, heading to buffalo 74. 70 in boston. lows tonight will dip in the upper 60s to the lower 70s. as we look ahead tomorrow this is when the 90s make a comeback. we will have them tomorrow and on sunday and quite possibly in to next week. we are looking to have a heat wave, which we get when we have three days or more of 90s in a row. you want to see that seven-day forecast, here it is. 92 tomorrow, everybody. 91 on sunday.

ocean city. an 11-year-old boy who was in cardiac arrest after a sand tunnel collapsed. dave is in the information center with all the details. dave. >> lesli, ocean city beach patrol captain told me this afternoon that the 11-year-old boy was reluctant at first, but now has once again enjoyed the sand back at 37th street. things looked grim as the child dug a tunnel out of the sand and became trapped. >> a lady responded, came up and said a kid was buried in the hole. i sprinted over to the hole. >> bystanders delayed a minute or two, because no one realized the young boy was in trouble. he credits a 12-year-old girl which sounded the alarm. he was trapped under the sand. she was right. >> a couple other guys helped unbury the kid. we pulled him out. he was unconscious. he was not breathing. he did not have a pulse. he was very blue. i stard cpr on him. >> the beach patrol in a defibulator. >> it didn't assess there was a shockable rhythm. thlife guards continued with cpr and within approximately a minute, we got a lse and the patient started breathing again while we had the patient still on the beach. >> i was very happy. i was happy all the training we ha
