we want to take you back to the breaking news in pacifica. uation of dozens of homes. the fire started just before 4:00 this morning. it's burning not far from tara nova high school. that is where brian flores you are on the scene. what can you tell us? >> reporter: hi, pam, good morning. we just got an update from the pio here with the north county fire authority who says right now the fire is at six alarms. i want to take a look here. a live picture now. the flames have been going on since just before 4:00 this morning. 80-90 homes have been evacuated. and those residents are being told to go to the pacifica community center which is located on 540 crestby. firefighters continue to battle this fire that started just before 4:00 this morning. several different fire fighting groups. when nay battle this fire, obviously the winds we've been talking about all morning. roughly 15 miles an hour at last check from the pio here said in the northwest direction. it's heading toward more vegetation. i asked if that was good news. it's not blowing towar

the temps. here's sal with an update on pacifica. >>> the good news, the fire in pacifica has closed some of the roads like fassler and rockaway bridge. it has not affected highway 1. with that said, highway 1 is slow. you can see some slow traffic which is somewhat typical. it's usually kind of a robust commute getting out of pacifica heading up to daly city in san francisco. no doubt that some of the local roads are still clessed in the area. let's take a look at some of the live pictures, westbound, the bay bridge about a 30- minute delay. it seems very normal. there's waiting to do. once you get on the bridge, it looks good. if you are driving in san jose, northbound 280 through downtown san jose, i think we have a live picture of this. northbound 280 traffic is slow as you drive through getting up to highway 17. 101 and 85 are getting slow. some drivers may be surprised. speaking of the spay by a big road closure in san jose this morning. the busy intersection of lundy avenue and sierra road will be closed from now until september. so crews can work on the south bay bart extension. janine d

fires burning like the one in pacifica earlier this week could become the norm. some brock looks at the numbers and see if the winter wildfires are really on the rise. >> this drought has taken a stranglehold on california. the last couple of years. it's not surprising that drier conditions have led to more fires in general. but in the dead of winter well we have cal fire pull up the figures for january for the last five years to see what kind of story there is. >> situated along the pristine coastline, the city of pacifica has plenty of waves, moisture-packed air and fog, not conditions typically conducive to this. a booming brushfire that sprang up in a cove not far from rock away beach on january 26th forcing the evacuation of some 80 homes. the north county fire department tells us this is a first wild west fire in pacifica this year. cal fire calls it an oddity. >> you have a fire on the coast. you would think the area is not susceptible to any type of fire due to where it's located and the moisture content there. >> other anomalies are cropping up too. you

it happened this is the scene in pacifica. an overnight wildfire forcing the evacuation of more than 80 homes. strange because this is right along our coast and perhaps our drought making things even worse. nbc bay area's mark matthews is in pacifica near the flash point. what do we know at this point? >> investigators are still looking for the cause of this morning's early fire. we do know that homeowners along this canyon rim need do more to protect themselves. this is what the neighborhood woke up to this morning, flames pushed by 10 to 15 mile-an-hour wind coming dangerously close to houses that sit atop the canyon. >> it is really scary. heart beating. flames 30 feet from the house and stuff. >> larry passmore showed pictures of his place at the height of the fire. grateful for a quick response from the fire crews. shz they basically protected the house. thank you. thank you to the firemen. they did a great job today. >> reporter: passmore is the owner of a fire extinguisher business. he has fire resistant vegetation aroun

the last victim found in pacifica. the district attorney says his dna has been linked to two of the cold case murders. halbower is accused of raping and murdering 17-year-old paula baxter and veronica casillo. they are happy to see someone brought to justice. >> when the murders were happening in 1976 i was a resident of the county and intern in the district attorney's office and i remember the fear throughout our community. >> halbower could potentially face life in jail. the death penalty does not qualify for his case because it wasn't enacted during the time of the alleged crimes. he will be arraigned in redwood city this afternoon. >>> the oakland police department is getting high praise from a federal monitor but it still has plenty of work left to do. in 2003 a court forced the oakland pd to reform itself after a police brutality scandal. the federal report shows the department has completed 19 of 22 tasks. the only thing is to find out why police officers get lesser punishments for infractions and other issues. >

the weekend. a look at your morning traffic, here's elizabeth. >>> i want to go to pacifica. we are hearing about a fatal crash, unfortunately, that has shut down a portion of skyline so the crash was reported at skyline boulevard and king drive. they are doing some traffic control in that area. and highway 35 is closed between manor and king. the accident was reported about an hour ago. so again, that's the area you want to avoid for now. in the meantime, it's just your overnight roadwork around the rest of the bay area. this morning it's southbound 880 hegenberger to 98th so between oklahoma and san leandro. near the oakland coliseum, though, things still look great. at the bay bridge, that roadwork from the center anchorage to harrison i have a feeling it may wrap up early. in the meantime barely a delay at the toll plaza. all is very clear at the golden gate bridge. i know they are gearing up for the big closure this weekend. it is closed saturday, sunday and scheduled to re-open early monday morning. so again, find those detours and out in the east bay once again the road

temperatures into the 60s under 70 everywhere. 61 pacifica. still 10 degrees above normal for this time of the year. extended forecast, with increasing cloud cover partly cloudy skies through saturday and then dry weather pattern through wednesday. >> we are sending a photographer to the scene of the traffic alert near the dublin interchange. unfortunately, we are seeing some delays now. it's an overturned big rig that was reported a little more than an hour ago on westbound 580 near foothill-san ramon road. the overturned big rig was hauling beer cans and they still have the two lanes blocked off. they have since the accident happened. other lanes get by. we are seeing a backup into the dublin grade. through the altamont pass, livermore valley, everything still looks okay. the backups haven't been huge so far because it is still so early in the morning. so hopefully they will be able to clear this before the commute really picks up after 5:00 or 5:30. we really haven't been able to get an estimated time of opening yet. right now the drive time
