i filled out an application for the peace corp. during my senior year because he had. he taught english in morocco. i taught math. we talked about the joys of living and working over seas. we spoke french together. later he helped me get an assignment with a pediatric a.i.d.s. group. now i work in a county hospital in stockton caring for patients from all over the world. like chris, i am genuinely interested in listening to their stories and learning about their lives. i was really hoping he would still be here. i dreamt of someday working as a detector in a country where he was ambassador. i was looking forward to showing off my growing new family. our daughter was born in april. chris got to hold her before leaving for his post in libya. as our father said best at 5 a.m. on september 12th, he made it to the top. he tried his best. he was a great brother. i couldn't agree more. it reminded me of a priceless letter he sent to me in law school when he was over there in the peace corps. chris wrote wonderful notes and told me when he went running in the village where he was staying, only to have locals come up beside him and say where is it, where did it go. where is what? your donkey. i don't have a donkey. >> why are you running? [applause] he's the district attorney of santa clara county and the recognized leader in criminal justice reform. he oversees the largest prosecutor's office north of los angeles and prosecute about 40,000 cases each year, so he is on the ground. he sees it all. he is however a green bay packer fan but we will forgive him because they lost. >> you should be ve

>> guest: this is a way to do it if you can take two years to join the peace corps. postmark when did you start voluntary? >> guest: i started after hurricane katrina. host mark what caused you to do this? >> guest: it was one of those times in my life when i didn't know what i was doing, and that this opportunity came up and i thought was perfect because i had no skills whatsoever. i did whatever they ask for in skilled people come in, they clean up than they do the serious work. so we did very basic labor. but it was necessary later. >> host: did you feel that your two weeks in new orleans was worthy? >> guest: guesstimate everywhere that i went from a question that. i said, what can you really do in two weeks? beyond the fact that yes, it is helpful to paint a house, but there was an intangible quality that it was good to be in new orleans nine months after hurricane katrina. people were so happy to have tourists back in people in the city. >> host: ken budd, what were you doing for a living prior to volunteering? >> guest: i was an editor and i was an editor in w

third on this 50th anniversary of the peace corps in thailand, we're moving ahead with new partnershipsote development and human dignity. we'll focus on public health, developing a vaccine for hiv/aids and ensuring the vaccine is stable. >>> we are trying to con front modern slavery, human trafficking. thailand is also taking measures to better protect and empower women and girls. we all agree it's a very important issue. and given thailand's role as an emerging company, i'm pleased our nations will work closely to promote development in other countries. we also welcome the leadership thailand has taken in protecting wildlife around the world. it's something thailand should be proud of. thailand supported the cause of democracy in burma, hosting refugees and promoting reform. and i very much appreciate the prime minister's insights as i prepare to visit tomorrow.

when i was in the peace corps. that is different. >> greg: my point is people can live on $11. ived on a couple of bucks. in some parts of the country you can. not even lives in manhattan. >> eric: nearly 75% of wal-mart management team members began an hourly employees. sorry, in 2011, nearly 180,000 associates receive promotions. 53% of them were women. they seem to be doing evening by the book according to the capitalism. >> dana: i can see why the workers want other things. anytime you are an employee anywhere you would like to have something they mentioned like more predictable schedules. maybe that is something that managers come to an agreement on. the other thing they have here, in addition to 75% of the people that start as hourly employee and then they have a good training program so you can become a manager and you have a stake in it. they have a quarterly share plan where it f the company does well and you want the company to do well on black friday, you get a little bit more. i am hoping that everybody will find some sort of holiday cheer on friday. >> bob: cheer, c

he created the peace corps. he was the first real civil rights president. turns out, he's a real history buff, he took the segregationist party and made it a civil rights party. he did that with mrs. king and then with ole miss and of course with obama. he had to integrate personally with bobby. he did a lot of that. he also, to me, inspired people to go into public life and said public life is where it's at. it's not business. it's not sports. it's public life. i think we all agreed that was probably the one rhett lent reality of our lives. he's still there as the symbol. look at bill clinton and all of these guys inspired to go into public life because of him. >> mark halperin? >> chris, beyond his brothers, the two subsequent generations, nobody has risen to that level. do you see in the second generation after president kennedy others who may still rise up and become big national leaders? >> well, i don't see it yet. i think the new joe kennedy in congress will do well. he'll be there for life if he wants to be. he may become senator for massachusetts.
