government for publishing the pentagon papers. it is well-known how "the new york times" first published exits of the secret document -- exerts of the secret documents, but less well-known is how the beacon press, a small nonprofit publisher, came t to publish the pages that exposed the history of the u.s. involvement in vietnam. the publication led the press into a spiral of two and a half years of fbi arrested, intimidation, near bankruptcy, and the possibility of criminal prosecution. this is a story that has really been told in its entirety. back in 2007, i moderated this historic event at the annual meeting of the unitarian universalist conference in portland, oregon, in front of about 5000 people, commemorating the publication of the pentagon papers and its relevance today. we hear the story from the three men at the center of the storm. grand rentagon and executive, and we also hear from mike gravel, who will tell the dramatic story of how we entered the pentagon papers into the congressional record and finally, robert west.
