it stopped at the 30th street station here in philadelphia. about 9:30 last night, and just a short distance away, after it left that station the train started to come off the tracks. several cars left the tracks. the engine part of the train separated from the rest of the train, came off the tracks as well as the train started to round a curve in this area. five crew members on board, and over 300 on board when this accident happened. as we have been telling you, 140 people taken to area hospitals. every hospital in philadelphia received some patients woe understand as they had to ramp up their staffing late last night. some of those injuries severe. and at least five people confirmed dead at this point. as many as six or seven people have been found dead already in this investigation. so from here, eun, that's what happens. an investigation that's happening with the fire department, also happening with the ntsb will be happening as the day and the days go on. eun? >> aaron gilchrist live in philadelphia for us thank you. we'll check in with y

new information this morning about the deadly amtrak crash in philadelphia. what the train's conductor is and is not saying this morning. we have new information about the victims and how available technology might have prevented this tragedy. good morning. welcome to "early start." i'm john berman. it is thursday may 14th, 2015. the investigation into the amtrak crash in philadelphia is focusing on speed. the national transportation safety board has recovered the black box from the wreckage. the train hit a tight curve on the north side traveling more than twice the posted speed limit of 50 miles per hour. more than 100 miles per hour it was traveling at the time. the engineer now identified as brandon bostian of new york slammed on the emergency brakes seconds before the engine and seven cars derailed. at least seven people died in the crash. more than 200 people were injured. eight victims in critical condition. let's get the latest on the investigation and go to cnn's brian todd. >> reporter: john, here is how the investigation is proceeding this morning.

philadelphia and washington. investigators say they still do not know exactly what happened between the time that train left philadelphia's 30th street station last night and the time it crashed just 10 minutes later. nbc news has confirmed the engineer driving that train last night was brandon bastion, someone who knows the engineer tells msnbc that he is a cheerful guy .has always been a fan of railroads. the person who knows brandon bostian declined to be identified with b but says he last saw bostian two weeks ago and they talked about trains because they're both fans. the person said, quote, the notion that he made it so to speak, is of no surprise to me made it driving trains end quote. bostian's facebook page says he's from memphis, tennessee, but now lives in new york city. the national transportation safety board says today the train was traveling at double the speed limit when the crash occurred killing seven people and injuring more than 200. >> just moments before the derailment, the train was placed the engineer into -- and this means that the engineer applied full emergency -- full emergency brake applicatio

people have asked if this train was operating on time and, the train 188 departed philadelphia the 30th street station, it departed, philadelphia on time. or 30th street station on time. it was running on time, at that point. somebody asked earlier today one of my one on one interviews what type of locomotive it was and i have check on that. it was an electrically powered locomotive. so, of course, it receives its electricity from the overhead cat it is called an ac s64 that stand for amtrak city sprinter. thinks one of the newer models that amtrak is place nothing to service. this particular locomotive was placed into service just over a year ago. i want to thank as i said, all of the first responders, we have received, excellent cooperation from the party to the investigation which would include amtrak, the federal railroad administration, and also would include the city of philadelphia for e that they have been doing. we want to thank the mayor's office and in particular, mayor nutter. we appreciate all of their support, and assistance. in just a moment i'll call for questions and be

i want to give kudos to the philadelphia police department because, again, seeing similar protests that are happening here, they were able to handle it without the violence. and i have to say, in some instances, you can kind of feel people are kind of rooting for it. it's in this reality-tv culture that we have, like, "oh, the drama's gonna be here next. let's get into the drama. let's be part of the scene." >> you know, i think it is. you're exactly right. and you know, i've been working on this issue most of my career, and let's be frank, it was a big problem. it still remains a problem in philadelphia. but we started seeing big change under commissioner timoney and continued under commissioner ramsey. and a lot of it has to do with leadership, it has to do with training, and it has to do with very effective internal affairs. and commissioner timoney kind of brought that approach with him and commissioner ramsey has continued with it, and i think that's why we didn't see, at least up to now, a violent reaction in our city. >> and i agree. >> let me go to renee, ed here in a second. le
