so i was behind the police line. we were waiting for someone to unlock the door and we heard the screeching noise and the pops, and we ducked for cover. i immediately heard an officer screaming in pain and they were escorted behind the suv right in my direct vision, and they laid him on the ground and got him medical attention. immediately after they called a all of the municipalities and the surrounding areas the cops pulled the guns out, and taking cover and pointing them in the direction of the protesters, and all of the protesters were starting to disburse and there was at lot of confusion. >> and you say, why at this point would the protesters do something like that on the same day that the police chief had resign resigned and others in the city had been resigning as well? >> absolutely. when you think of 250 days of protest, we have been out when people have been kill ded and no reactions like that, and we have been practicing civil disobedience and that is an outsidage ta the for the, and for the police departm

chief resigned, two police officers were shot during protests outside the ferguson police department. the officers were taken to a nearby hospital with their conditions still unknown. they're not identified at this point but some information is being provided. one is a 41-year-old st. louis county police officers who a veteran and the other is 32 years old from webster groves police department who's been with the department for five years. we want to bring in as much information as we can. we begin with nbc producer on the scene all night. jennifer, describe for us what you saw and what you know at this point. >> reporter: well chief bell mar describe i would echo. the protest has been going on since a little after eight and was fairly routine with chanting and back and forth and things had begun to quiet down. officers had begun to left their line although there were still about 30 officers there. we were thinking things were going to break up. there were still maybe 25 to maybe as even as 50 protests but it was quiet and we were thinking it was going to break down. it was shortly a

protestors began gathering outside of the ferguson police department this was after the news police chief tom jackson would be resigning around midnight the protests began to dwindle out. around that time shots range out from the ferguson police department. shots we are told with a group of police officers. that is when the two officers were hit. they say they are still searching for who it was that did that shooting. they did not have any suspects. shortly after the shooting when the officers were taken from the scene investigators began to comb over that area to look at shell casings and any evidence they could find. they say that will be updated as well later on this morning. the sun does come out and they are able to make more progress on that. it has been a volatile situation since november. john belmar said earlier this morning it was a matter of time at the rate the things have been going until something like this happened. >> we have been taking a look at these images. this is video two protestors were arrested prior to the shooting. going back to the shooting itself we have been

the st. louis county police. part of the investigation into last noit's shooting of two police officers following a protest in ferguson. they're not giving us anymore details. we can tell you it's been priority number one to find a shooter or shooters who wounded two police officers last night. they did recover some shell casings they think could be from a pistol. they got help from members of the community including the protest community that may have led them to this house that you're looking at right now. >> just to be clear with the situations like this, we're not showing you live pictures. these pictures are on delay. obviously we want to be careful when this is a very developing situation on the ground. our affiliate, kmov bringing us these pictures. we heard from the county police chief at the press conference earlier today that as they're investigating this shooting overnight, that they perhaps had some leads on who shot those two police officers. they didn't have anyone in custody obviously this morning.

what's the latest? >> police officers from neighboring departments had gathered outside the ferguson police departments in case protests got out of control. just after midnight, things did get out of control in a most frightening way. >> journalists and a protesting crowd were beginning to disperse when suddenly at midnight, shots rang out. witnesses counted three to four shots fired. >> as we were about to pack our cameras up, we hear what we thought were fireworks you were the street. turns out happened three more times, it was gunfire. we saw the muzzle fire from a gun on top of the street, so we just all ducked down and once we ducked down, we saw the cop was shot next to us. >> the shots wounded two officers. neither was a ferguson officer. a 41-year-old officer from st. louis county was shot in the shoulder a 32-year-old officer was shot in the face. st. louis county police chief said the shots came from behind the protestors across the street. >> i would have to make an assumption right now that based on t
