not only for the community, but the port. and hopefully with this labor day celebration the community will come out clearly. the port belongs to every citizen of san francisco. i'd like to update my other commissioners. on july 19th, myself and jim malony of mayor [speaker not understood] took supervisor scott wiener, gave him a tour of the harbor. supervisor wiener was really impressed. he had never seen the harbor from the water side looking in. we had about two hours with supervisor scott wiener and clearly he's a big supporter of the port and he said the port is a hidden jewel. it has so much great potential. it's really like a hidden gem down there in the city. and he and the other board of supervisors will continue to support it. on july 21st, i had lunch with three u.s. senators, u.s. senator brian schatz of hawaii, u.s. senators jeff huntley of oregon, and [speaker not understood] of delaware, they were in san francisco. i had a private meeting with them. i took jim malony with me to that meeting. they all come from po

seafood and processing center at the port. decades of neglect started to be reversed. 1986, 1200 foot break water was built to protect the fleet, 30 acre commercial harbor which was the first step. and just as plans started to get traction, just like the fisherman have to deal with mother nature, so did the port. in 1989 loma-prieta earthquake altered the timeline and cost for renewal of fisherman's wharf. pier 45 the planned location for seafood center suffered significant earthquake damage and chased away the last number of dwindling company doing fishing at the port. the cost skyrocketed and for a moment it seemed there may no longer be any fish at fisherman's wharf. undaunted, we began a $14 million earthv quake repair project at the wharf at pier 45 which when completed turned into dee cap it seismically pier into a receiving processing center. i can recall pundits at the time saying the industry was too far gone and it would never come back to san francisco. even if we fixed pier 45. luckily, when the facility opened in 1

so i did want to take a minute and talk about the port's response to the bart strike. i'm not sure how many of our public knows about what our response was. we are not responsible for transportation directly, but we definitely want to support our partners of whom there are many when things like this happen, and we have worked through these issues a couple of times when there has been changes to bart or the bay bridge and it came together fairly well. thankfully it wasn't sustained longer than three days and i hope it's not returning to us in august, but i wanted you to know in particular the maritime staff work worked with the ferry operators and passengers and deputized themselves ambassadors of the ferry and the water transit who is here today and thank you for coming. basically what we ended up doing is -- rene if you would start that first. renee is my vanna white today if you don't mind. >> [inaudible] >> all right. so here at the ferry building there are two gateses that run three primary lines. -- or four primary lines. there is gate b that runs a couple lines.

so, i'm wondering if the port -- i'm just trying to help here -- if the port would look at something like that because we do -- we were don't have a great reputation as far as getting things done as far as leasing -- most people i talk with are hard to deal with.
