sam adams, the mayor of portland, is live via telephone. as we look at the live pictures, can you tell us why you are taking this action now? >> well, we -- the encamp mentes for occupy portland is just a block away and we had a series of increased drug overdoses, we had to bring people back to life. we had an arsonist that used a camp camouflaged for his work, 20% increase in crime surrounding the encampment and the organizers of the encampment themselves issued a statement a week or so ago saying they realized that there were some who were taking advantage of their good will. we worked with them, but in the end it just became too great a public safety burden and that's why we moved to clear the camps out, which we have and it was compared to other efforts around the country relatively peaceful. live shots that you aring now are some of the protesters who had sought to protest the last remnant of the camp that we cleared out about an hour ago. >> ma mayor adams, you are correct. these are live pictures and with you see police in there gear

the hour. 8:00 eastern time. but it is 5:00 a.m. in portland, oregon, where you are looking at a live picture of where protesters occupy protesters have defied a deadline to leave an encampment where these demonstrators that been for the past several weeks. they were giving a midnight local time deadline to leave. that order came from the police and from the mayor. but here we are, five hours after that deadline has come and gone. but the protesters have not gone anywhere. we did get word from police, at least one police officers was hit with a projectile. he had to be taken to the hospital. told he is going to be okay. but for the most part we have not seen violence break out but police are standing by in riot gear. we don't have word of whether or not they are about to move in and try to get people out. we did get word a short time ago -- at least a local paper, police are now telling people you need to get out of the streets or face arrest. again, we have been watching these pictures throughout the morning and we are five hours past that dea

and the heart of downtown portland. they moved here after being moved out of three public parks in the downtown portland area. and there was actually a long standoff situation before the protesters came here to pioneer courthouse square. a standoff with police and riot officers and protesters from the occupy movement. but also others -- many who are called anarchists who have been sparring with police. they are a more violent portion of these protesters sparring with police. that standoff situation lasted for hours. no one was seriously hurt but the tensions were very high. the sides went back and forth. the possibility of teargas being used was definitely a possibility but it didn't come to that. and so now it all subsided and they've moved here to pioneer courthouse square. the protesters, they've been chanting here in the parks getting their message out. they say they don't plan to camp here in pioneer courthouse square. this park actually closes at midnight tonight. they don't plan to camp, but they plan to stay here

you can see the area where we have the two parks that are for occupy portland. the last 75 days where people were camped out here. but a considerable number of the campers left in the past few days. since the order came down from the leadership that they wanted everyone to begin leaving if not out by 12:01 a.m. this morning. we had a sizeable force here and the one to 2:00 hour is when we had the peak of really the tension that was in the air this morning. one portland police officer got hit by an object. we are still not sure what it was. police have not clarified that. he got hit in the leg and the person who threw the object was quickly arrested by police. that that was the only arrest we heard about in the morning hours. they can block one of the main thoroughfares for a couple of hours and then cleared it after the police requested them to do that right around 6:00 this morning. it was a cutestous request and the protestors obliged, there was a makeshift barricade set up that the protestors put at one intersection. but the self-policing we have seen by occup
