scott walker being out of the race. i maintain tells us very little about who is likely to be the republican nominee for president of the united states of america. it is likely to have zero effect on the top-tier contenders. because he had less than 1/2 of one percentage point support in nationwide polls. the more pressing question it raises is who's likely to be the next candidate at the bottom of the list to drop out? because in that latest cnn national poll with that devastatingly low result of support for scott walker he is tied at that devastatingly low level of support with four other candidates. he's tied in the cnn poll below 1%, at the very bottom of measurable support, he's tied with george pataki and lindsey graham and bobby jindal and jim gilmore. how long are those guys going to stay in the race? in the latest iowa poll, the ppp iowa poll that is just out today, scott walker was polling at 5%. which is a disaster for somebody who's whole presidential cane depends on them winning iowa. but scott walker at 5%

john: he came into the race with a lot of doubt. ople thought he was not necessarily intellectually up to the task and was not a major league player. in that moment in the spring, he seemed to put the doubts to rest but he has made a lot of mistakes, a lot of flubs in interviews, said things that were provocative. to think about suggesting a wall with canada -- the chattering classes have been reinforced in their initial doubts. mark: the favorability of a lot of people are down in iowa. another thing that the poll is between the two front runners, donald trump and ben carson. trunk is up to us -- trump is up to 60% and carson has a higher rating. it is better for carson, but there are some interesting things. john: the two most important things that stand out is among evangelical voters which is a huge bloc in iowa and among very conservative voters, carson handily beats trump. he beats and a lot of categories. but those two categories, he beats him badly. you look at the dynamics of iowa -- trump has room to grow but those suggest

so that's an extraordinary share of voice in the race. so if you're not engaging trump you risk completely falling out of the conversation. and if he's going to be the front-runner then we need to have a conversation about where we stand and what that means as a party so that's really about jump starting that conversation. >> so it wasn't something that senator paul particularly expected to gain from? just something that you guys considered necessary given trump's status in the race. >> well, i think that rand speaks from the heart, and he speaks about the things that he cares about, and i think that he worries about having somebody that -- i think there's many parts of trump's record that are concerning to lots of conservatives out there. and primaries are the time to litigate those things. >> so there are people who will tell you in iowa and, to be honest, most of them are associated with ted cruz but they'll tell you that ted cruz has been able to eat into rand paul's libertarian support out there. do you think there's any truth to that
