we are standing in the center of downtown grand rapids. this intersection has always been the heart of grand rapids from the earliest days when the city was first founded in the 1830's. what we have done is created a re-creation of what the square might have looked like in the 1890's with a series of different businesses representing different architectural styles, the period , run by real people from grand rapids, different ethnic backgrounds, showing some of the different industries that were around town. the grocery store is run by the kaminsky family, so they would have been polish. by van door for shop is run dutch immigrants, and the powers opera house is william powers, one of the founders of grand apids, who is what we call yankee from the old stock american from out east who came to grand rapids and set up lots of different businesses here in town, including the entertainment business and the upper house. operaral behind me -- the house. the mural behind me is what the square would have looked like on an afternoon with lots of peop

it runs right in the middle of grand rapids. and finally the labor force. grand rapids had many immigrants from european countries that had the skills to carve wood, operate machinery, and build furniture. all those three things combined in the years following the civil war to make a perfect storm for grand rapids to become the furniture city. there was a whole class of wealthy town leaders who decided wanted to invest in the furniture industry. these were those who wanted to control the banks, they control the capital. they had access to funds to set up a furniture factory. by working together, this first round of furniture companies was 1860's and in the 1870's. these are some of the earliest furniture companies in grand rapids they got the ball rolling to start that. this is a highly idealized painting of the furniture factories in grand rapids, michigan. it is certainly true that this was one of the biggest furniture manufacturers and they had huge factories on the grand river, there is a bit of exaggeration going on in this piece. it really does convey

the city is asking volunteers to bring shovels. cedar rapids is asking people who have parked their vehicles on downtown streets to move them by seven tomorrow morning. sixth street southeast to the cedar river and from a avenue to eighth avenue southeast. the city needs these areas clear so the city and contractors can move equipment and materials there for flood protection. cedar rapids is suspending bus service through tuesday because of the predicted flooding. at that time, the city will reassess when to start running busses. cedar rapids is warning people who'll need to evacuate and who have pets to try to find alternative housing before taking them to shelter. but cedar rapids animal care and control says pet owners can use that facility, if they have to. it'll start accepting those pets at noon tomorrow. cedar rapids is not alone in this flood fight. mayor corbett says surrounding towns and many companies have offered to help any way they can. the state is also helping. governor branstad has already issued emergency disaster declarations

here you can see the main stem rapids. once you get into the blue shaded areas that's what a 24-foot crest would overspread. a lot of the area downtown and some residential areas hit back in twaightd will once again go under water if we get the crest of 24.1 feet here in cedar rapids. that's the latest reading that we're anticipating. now as we take a look at the river levels upstream. the cedar river and cedar falls. that expected to come in the morning hours on sunday. the cedar river in waterloo anticipating a major crest at 24.8 feet. from there the river goes on down toward vin ton. 22.1 feet and finally sometime monday night the river should crest here in cedar rapids at 24.1 feet. and flood stages 12 feet. the interest thing about this it was expected to crest at 15 feet but because of that tremendous rain to the north the crest is now up about 9 feet in just 24 hours time. still have a flash flood watch in effect for much of area. this is extended now. a look at the latest radar. showers and thunderstorms are still
