ray was among the top of the mentors i had in life. you should know ray price brought me into the white house and i never would have been there had it not been for him and another dear friend i went to school with, jonathan rose. i was -- kind of a long story short, i was -- i had come back -- i had gone to law school after college and after law school went into the navy. my last year of naval service was in washington and i did a little work with the white house. when i was mustering out of the navy, thought i was going back to north carolina and was in conversations there, in fact, at the university of north carolina to stay there. but in the meantime i had john rose who worked in that white house had been like law school roommate called me and said there's an opening here at the white house with ray price. do you know ray price? i have no idea who he is. he said, well, ray has just become head of the speech writing team. it's a speech writing research team, about 50 people. he needs an administrative assistant. why don't you come in

the hell. sounded like great fun, very interesting. what ray did not know is i'm probably the world's worst administrator. i have as my team will tell you, you cannot give me any piece of paper without having a duplicate because you will lose it. we will lose it within about 15 minutes. my office was like the worst pig pen you ever saw. it was right next to ray's. richard nixon came by one day at lunch. i wasn't there. the door was open. he looked inside. he shook his head and said, i can't believe this guy is working for me because he was a well organized person. >> how did you escape the rath of bob haldeman? >> i never knew. i don't think haldeman had a clue i was over there for a long time. >> if he had seen your office. >> if he had seen my political pedigree, seen my office and what a geek i was, he probably would have said forget it, we or not bringing this guy in here. ray was an extraordinarily good writer and he was a wonderful mentor for me and he really -- we spent a lot of time together. evenings i recall most vividly, at that time

ray was a positive influence in the white house who was very close to nixon. he always looked out for me, and i've revered that friendship and that relationship for a long time. i've always looked up to ray price. last time i saw him was here at the kennedy library or in boston and he came um to me for a conversation about speech writing. it was very good to see him. ray price also was -- we recruited some of the speech writing team. we had -- i think it was peggy no nan who wrote that nixon speech writing team was like the 1927 yankees. it was a really, really strong group of people. we had real heavy hitters. i was there, buchanan was there. and with ray i was there to help sort of recruit some of the people who came in. lee huebner was there, went on to become publisher of the international tribune. we recruited john mclaughlin, went on to the mclaughlin group and we also -- there were like 14 speech writers. a fellow named arab back shum there, ken khachigian was part of that group, went on to california politics, had an enormous influence in california and

the family. >> reporter: this x-ray is the before and after. the doctor shows the x-rays of the two healthy lungs which will be given to this 17 year old on january 31st. most doctors didn't think victoria would live to see her senior year after diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, she was taken off of lung transplant list and needed the help of a machine to breathe. >> that saved her life. we couldn't use her, couldn't use her lungs to help her sustain her life to get the oxygen in to her body. it was terrifying prior to her transplant. >> reporter: the machine like this one, continue to breathe for victoria after her mom put in a call to university of maryland, she was put on the wait list and received lungs in january. >> we consider this a great success. we try really hard, we are not successful always, she is here seeing old friends in the icu, nurses and now the cheerleader for the nurses. >> i owe them everything pretty much. er wouldn't be here if they didn't push. i wouldn't be here. >> reporter: as victoria prepares to rejoin her class
