i live in the richmond district. i was appointed to the mta citizens advisory council by supervisor mar. thank you, supervisor, for appointment to that and for inviting me to participate in this event. when it comes to transit, municipal transportation agency is an enterprise agency, so it is -- there are budget discussions around the transit agency, but it is supposed to have its own budget, that is past due balance annually. the mta already did its budget and balanced it, but there are ways the general fund budget can impact the mta. when i come to the issue of transit, on a personal level, i look at the big picture. in our current transportation system, we do not have enough money in general every year. we are cutting corners here and there in the agency. we might be cutting service, we might be raising fees. we might be raising fares. so, that is one issue -- an ongoing issue with the agency. we are also not using energy efficiently. we need to have enough money to run the system and we need to use our energy effi

she and her husband were instrumental in the beginning of the richmond district neighborhood center. that was 36 years ago. totally a grass-roots effort to save the school district law from being turned into condominiums, and turning it into social services for the richmond district, which there are very few social services. we now have served over 3000 people per week in all of the schools and other sites around the richmond district. we do that on a $3 million budget. our main focus at the neighborhood center is that we are trying to keep families in san francisco. all of you have read over and over again how we lose our families. you see corridors of the city where there are many strollers about, and then you say, happens to all of them? they move out when they want to buy a home or go to a good school. we have to get the word out that we have good schools. we are proud of our schools in the richmond district. my children went to alamos school. i personally would not run a program that i would not send my own child to. i challenge all of you to have that same mantra for yourselves,

this is the 90th anniversary of our richmond district ymca. we have a special proclamation we have provided today. the tremendous staff at the ymca, when i go into the 18th avenue, there is a tiny little parking lot back there, but it is a warm place that allows me to de-stress after difficult board meetings, but also a place to hide out and work the weight room. there is tight she, -- tai chi, pilates, yoga, ballet, and programs from the middle schools as well. 90 years is a tremendous accomplishment. born in 1022 -- 1922 after the influx of families after the earthquake that move out west -- it creates tremendous opportunities for our families in the richmond district. i think the first location was near where the richmond branch library is, close to geary, where the antique -- where the at&t building is. i hope we can expand it to a much better space in the future. there are currently over 4000 members like myself of the richmond district ymca. the programs include youth development and how the living. i really support the healthy families a

many different small-business owners on the richmond have struggled as a result of many factors that include the threat posed by that growth of large industries. i was successful in passing an ordinance that supported small businesses by limiting a formula retail pet stores on the geary corner. it was intended to include more active storefronts. for technical reasons, that aspect was moved from the original legislation. this is trilling legislation from that. in november of 2011 i introduced the proposed ordinance that would amend section 26 3.20 of the planning code to provide for a special height exception of 5 feet -- parcels along geary boulevard. the planning department has recommended expanding the legislation to provide the 5 ft. exception for clement street from [unintelligible] to funston avenue, one block west of 12th ave. the commercial district, clementon street anto 18th avenue. and balboa between second and eighth avenue and over by the balboa theater. after the introduction of this legislation in november, i heard from residents of the jordan park area of district 2 and

. >>> caltrans workers inspecting the richmond san rafael bridge after a truck fire shut it down temporarily. that is the truck you are seeing now. good morning i'm cheryl jennings. >>> and i'm kristen sze. laura anthony is live near the bridge. any lanes still closed? >> reporter: there is one lane still closed eastbound direction where the fire occurred after 10:00 this morning. we are standing on the richmond side you are looking across to the richmond san rafael bridge as we speak, one lane on the eastbound side is open. this fire happened in the middle section after 10:00 this morning it sent plumes of smoke high into the sky you could see it from miles around the bay area. they have reopened one lane in the eastbound direction for a time there were two lanes closed in all directions but they were able to reopen it quickly. we can show you live pictures from the area you can see traffic backed up into marin county, even though one lane is open, they are still assessing the damage. caltrans is going to inspect the bridge to check for any damage to the structure itself. obviously, they ar

we live in the richmond district. but if my son attends either one of the schools, i have to spend a lot of time taking my kids and also taking three buses to the school. and both of them have to get up very early and i think they will be too tired to attend school. i hope the school district can provide the program in chinatown and also richmond so to allow the kids born up to november 1, between november 1 and december 2, to attend tk school near our house. thank you. the richmond enquirer, decried the unbecoming vanity, displayed by the wardrobes of the richest merchants unsuitable for a nation fighting for its survival. the way was for the government to regulate all trade. this of course flew directly in the face of that doctrine of state's rights. state rights i'm told to say. the increasingly desperate condition of the rebel armies and weakening confederate economy led to a popular clamor for the richmond government off to talk over regulation of trade entirely. in february 1864, jefferson davis got the confederate congress to pass a law that requires all outbound, blockade runners, to reserve half of their space for government owned cotton. a month later he urged on congress, a law, forbidding importation of any high value and profitable luxury goods that had been the common cargos in the first two years of the war. it was a long list. i will share some with you. see if you can catch a hint of the theme here. here's what was banned, ale, beer, rum, brandy, billiard tables, furniture, carpeting, tapestry, carriages, lace, jewelry, dolls, toys, glas
