we want to get a glimpse of the royal baby. es live in london this morning. >> abc's alex marquardt keeping an eye on it all. alex, what is next as this happy family gets ready to leave the hospital? >> reporter: good morning, john, diana. we are not sure when they will be leaving the hospital with their new bundle of joy. prince william issued that brief statement last night saying we couldn't be happier and then spent the night in st. mary's with his new family. we're hoping to catch a glimpse at least of him today. possibly all three of them, re-enacting the famous scene from 31 years ago when prince charles and princess diana left that st. mary's lindo wing with william. now, when william and kate do leave, we're expecting them to go back to kensington palace their royal residence for at least two weeks while prince william is on paternity leave from his job as air force search-and-rescue pilot. >> alex, lots of celebrations yesterday. i fear we can expect more of the same later today. what are the expectations? what are we

the twitter. whether boy or girl, this royal baby will be third in line to the throne. our nbc royal watcher is outside the hospital. what's going on over there? >> reporter: toure, i never thought i'd hear somebody introduce me as the nbc royal watcher. i have to say it's been over 14 hours since some paparazzi tweeted early this morning they'd seen a convoy of cars, no ambulance, just civilian cars swing into the side entrance of this hotel. not, of course, where we were all waiting here in front of the hospital, i should say. that was followed by a short statement from kensington palace confirming kate was indeed in early stages of labor. several hours later, as you mentioned, there was a note saying that she was -- everything was proceeding normally. that's been it. we're in that zone now where the birth could happen now, within minutes, or hours or go into tomorrow morning. we simply don't know. everyone who thinks they know is simply speculating. except for kate herself. the excitement, however, even amongst the more hardened of us, the press corps, is palpable. it
