the biggest loser among the s&p 500 was jelly maker j.m. smucker. a disappointing quarter and outlook hit the stock. shares slid 8%. volume was almost ten times average, with shares sinking to their lowest since october. higher prices of its jif peanut butter and folgers coffee hurt its sales, and margins are getting pinched by higher costs. meantime, amazon.com also missed out on the rally today. shares fell 2.5%, and they've been trending lower since october. morgan stanley cut its rating to equal-weight over concerns that sales of iphones and ipads could hurt amazon's electronic book selling business. but there was also an industry report showing amazon's own kindle fire tablet has cut into the market share of the ipad. and a couple of specialty retailers saw big stock losses. build-a-bear workshop fell apart, losing more than a quarter of its value. earnings came in shy of estimates and its store sales dropped. online jewelry retailer blue nile was tarnished after missing estimates and a disappointing forecast. shares fell 10%. finally tonight, b

the s&p at multi-year highs. the dow at multi-year highs. this underlying bid to the market that traders are talking about. you see how we move to the negative territories very early on. this is a typical pattern seen day after day throughout the year. but as the consumer confidence number came out, sitting near the highs for the day. take a look at all the major indiceses. i think there's something very important happening here. i like everything i'm seeing except right here. you don't want to see divergences between the dow industrials and the dow transports. weakness in a number of groups in the transports. overseas shipholding, oil shippers, essentially, tough on rates. their earnings just out. the railroads are weak, fedex and the shippers are weak, united parcel is weak. this is not a good sign, that divergence we're seeing. one thing i do like is all the news around apple. that's moving a lot of the semiconductors that are not only affiliated with apple but even those not affiliated. there's apple, new high. but sandisk, they make tha

take a look at the s&p 500 and this is going back to 2007. golden cross, not to be confused with the cross of gold, which they warned us not to crucify ourselves on. golden cross is what the chartists call it when an index's 50-day moving average crosses above its 200-day moving average. something that happened to the s&p 500 just this morning. why is that considered so bullish? remember what these moving averages represent. the 200-day moving average measures the long-term trajectory. it's the average price of the s&p 500 over the last 200 days, and the 50, with 50-day measures it's short term trajectory, so, when the 50-day crosses above the 200-day, it means that the s&p 500's performance has been improving. the trend over the last two and a half months is better than the trend over the past ten months. that's bullish. as many of the technicians i talked to pointed out, these are lagging indicators meaning they tell you more about the past, not the future. just because the s&p 500 has been getting more positive doesn't mean it will keep get

as we take a break, look at some of the standouts today in the s&p 500. re watching the "closing bell" on cnbc. >>> hello. bob pisani down on the floor of the new york stock exchange. great start to the month. i want to talk about the volume. we've had broad participation, 5-1, advancing to the declining stocks, more stocks -- more volume going to the stocks on the up side than the down side. i love it when i see health care advancing along with industrials, along with raw materials, along with telecom. financials leading, that's great news as well. tech's also been strong throughout the day. get the point? broad participation. light on earnings today. get what's at a new historic high today? chipotle. what a monster. this was $125 a year and a half ago. it's going to have earnings after the close, we're expecting numbers that are, well, they've beaten earnings 11 out of the last 12 times. this is the big retail stock right now. >> forget technology, it's all about fast food. >> about time. what a monster. the market today off of the best levels of the ses

over 85% of the s&p 500 has been trading lower, the components of the s&p 500. aq and s&p with the sell-off today, now in danger of breaking their five-week win streak. up to this point, it looked like we were going to be up for the week, but now that's in danger. let's start with the market that's been the key all week, the euro. it rallied as there were expectations that we were going to see -- weekly charts obviously -- expectations we would see some resolution of the greek debt crisis, now back down again on the euro. the price of gold has acted like a risk asset this week. it's been keying off the euro as well. we had a pretty good rally earlier in the week. now we're down to $1721. many traders are watching that $1710 level as support. we'll have to wait to see next week what it does with that. oil has been very interesting. our market here in new york, wti crude, approached the $100 a barrel level, failed to get above that. and has pulled back today. more interesting has been the brent crude contract in london. that has just been bulling an eight-day rally

the jobs market. dow right now is currently down. s and nasdaq though the nasdaq in specific is showing outperformance. a lot of upbeat earnings out of technology sector. gold higher and crude down. banks are on a tear. that's why financials are up. in terms of other bright spots, energy's on the rise and technology, as i said, continues to show strength. that's adding strength to the tech index. let's go to the commodities and sharon epperson, over to you. >> the reason gold is higher is due to in part to bernanke's statement about the sluggishness of the economic recovery and that has sparked some buying. we're looking at gold prices at a new high for 2012. above that key 1750 resistance level. and the next target is likely to be 1805, traders tell me. we're also looking at the tense selloff here in the oil market. after we got those very weak demand numbers for gasoline from the energy department in the previous session and gasoline's falling as well. the story to watch though is definitely natural gas. the pop we're seeing there af

the s&p 500 is up by .6 of a percent. just cannot seem to get past the psychological hurdle. >> did you say this would be the first, if it closed here, the first triple-digit close for the dow? for the down side? yeah. >> we haven't seen the triple-digit loss in a very long time. >> we haven't had the s&p down in this territory, i don't think either. i think the most -- biggest decline was .57% at the end of january. things are starting to look a little topee. two sectors looking a little topee. first, mr. yunker, who has the eurozone, finance minister, also the prime minister of luxembourg, released a statement saying they're making progress. he's confident that they will have an agreement by february 20th. that's the next official eurozone finance minister. we say this with a little bit of sarcasm these days. but the bottom line is, he says progress has been made. let's not go into all the details. i want to comment on two sectors, apple kind of rolled over in the middle of the day. there were vague rumors floating aroun

today, and questionable results, the 1970's and 1980's and then the waterfront plan of the 1990's andlennium. a lot of the names that you will know as leadership in the city or of the port are featured in the book. the book itself is written by a man named jasper written who is a assistant professor at san francisco state university and is in the department of urban studies he was formally an employee of the san francisco planning department where he served as a lead it planner in the central waterfront plan, and his knowledge of the waterfront which was adopted in 2007. he is a current member of the central waterfront advisory committee. what ended up happening is he prepared his dissertation on the development of the port of san francisco from the 1950's to the present that worked at that time and subsequently with a bunch of different parts staff to look at numerous proposals. prior attempts to build cruise ship terminals are in the book as an example. the world trade center was opposed the 30 story tower is featured in the book. this is a book that we hope to be able to help distr

the s&p 500 still has momentum. but obviously not as strong momentum, and it will focus more on the dollar and the correlation to the s&p 500 going forward. >> bill, where do you stand on energy, and its impact on equity prices eventually? >> i have a hard time coming up with an actual number as far as where the tipping spot is for the price of oil relative to consumption. i think in general, if people start to believe that oil prices are going to stay high, then you're going to see some degree of impact on consumption. it has to do with the believability of the numbers over the longer run. >> okay. s&p, let's get to your bailey wick here, katy stockton. what kind of numbers, what kind of resistance or support levels are you looking at right now? >> the resistance is fairly obvious. it's about 2011 high, right around 1370. what i would look for a breakout would be consecutive weekly closings above that level, meaning two fridays. just getting above it on an interday basis is not enough to call it a breakout. that bre
