here you can see 40's to the north, here are the 50's. now we go into the 60's and 70's to the southwest. this pocket of marine air is plaguing us today. the question is, will it break? will some sunshine try to come through? will the wind shift and warm us up a bit? it will be tough. here is that area of cloudiness with that marine air. here is the flow of air coming in. that front has to be pushed back a little bit. there is some weather out to the west, and maybe this impulse will help to push that back later today, but maybe not soon enough to warm us up with any kind of significance. in general, it's warm in the eastern 2/3 of the nation. this little pocket of chilly air is skillet -- keeping us from enjoying the warm stuff we have had in the past few days. shower and thunderstorm chance increases in the evening hours. these southeast winds are 10 to 15 miles per hour. upper 60's might be optimistic for some folks. some folks may be in the low to mid 50's for highs today. somebody might hit 70. a broad range of potential highs today.

look at the worst-performing sectors for the s&p 500 this week. and you see a lot of these, the energy, the materials, even the utilities that can be affected by the higher dollar. that's what was going on there. and of course, oil, this is a big week for the price of oil. a lot of volatility there. and when all was said and done, i mean, here was the spike we saw earlier this week on talk that there was an explosion at that saudi oil pipeline which the saudis now are denying. and this is the sell-off with that saudi denial here, and for the week, price of crude oil is lower. i think the stronger dollar helped with that as well. and then the price of gold also affected by that. look at this, a huge sell-off on wednesday for gold. and we never really saw a comeback there. so you have to wonder whether 1800 was a major resistance level for that. i've got plenty of people telling me they are still convinced that the price of oil is going to go higher. you'll have to see a lower dollar for that to happen here. the best performing sectors for the week,

unchanged on the s&p 500. big day today, of course, nonfarm payrolls, the 8:30 jobs report, look at the dollar index spiking on the upside. normally you would see the euro go to the downside, and that's exactly what happened. these are interday charts. rest of the market held up very well. generally we had material stocks hold up very well. on days like today, typically that doesn't happen. the volatility index, there it is. here's the whole week. essentially we're largely unchanged, despite the big spikeup we saw on tuesday on concerns about some slowing global growth. markets didn't react very well to the gdp. cooler heads prevailed and realized that's going to be a soft landing for china. they'll likely have something close to an 8 or 9 handle. bottom line, it's been a fairly good week overall. china soft landing, europe, recession, yes, but contained. and u.s. economic improvement. those themes are still very much intact. david is here to talk about that. >> love your tie today. >> it looks like we're both

now, why was the economy so much more stable between the mid 1980's and the mid 2000's? well, there's lots of research on it, lots of issues, lots of papers. i think there's a good bit of evidence that monetary policy played a role in creating better stability, in particular volcker's contribution was even though his short term efforts to bring down inflation in the early 1980's led to a high recession, led to a lot of pain, there was a payoff and that payoff was an economy which was much more stable with low, stable inflation, more stable monetary policy, more confidence on the part of business people and households, and that contributed very importantly toso you remember that the -- and friedman pointed out there was no long-term tradeoff between inflation and unemployment by keeping inflation a little higher, you couldn't permanently lower unemployment. but in a different sense -- which is true. but in a different sense, low and stable inflation over a long economy more stable and supports healthy growth and productivity in economic activity. very good thing to have.

the nasdaq and s&p are trying to avoid the second weekly loss, though, of 2012., 1.1% now for the dow, for the week. we're not exactly talking a major correction here yet. we've had a very good run for the major averages going back to early october. so 1% decline. it's not going to be too hard. for the fixed income markets, we're starting to come lower. so for the week, the ten-year yield is down 2.5%. pretty big decline. the 30-year is probably a bigger decline because you get a big whip saw decline. down for the week. the yield coming that much lower. price of oil heading steady this week. down a tiny fraction after volatility. up in the $108 range earlier in the week and now we finish below $107 per barrel. gold this week was trading like the bond market for a time. it was trading more like a hedge and for the week it's up a fraction. today it's had a pretty good run. again, it's been acting less like a risk on trade and more like a hedge, like it traditionally does. the s&p, consumer staples, discretionaries, did better, technology was up there. nobody loves
