and the s&p soared almost 30%, its best year since 1995. looking at the sectors of the s&p, all ten rose in the past year. consumer discretionary stocks did the best. they were up an amazing 41%. now the biggest winner on the s&p was netflix. its stock almost quadrupled, rising 297%. the biggest loser -- new mont mining. it plunged 50%. in the commodities markets, gold lost its glitter in 2013. the precious metal tumbled 28% for the year, closing at 1,201 -- $1,201 an ounce. oil prices rose 7%, closing at $98.62 a barrel. >>> now that we've closed the books on such a sensational year, what's in store as the calendar turns the page to january? as we report, wall street history shows january is usually a good month for the markets. so what do i think could happen in the s&p? i'm looking at 8- 10% but we could see the vix a couple of times this year approach 30%, possibly 40%. cyclically i think we're moving toward---we're gonna start seeing volatility go back into the market especially at the fed trying to taper its bond buying. >>warren buffett is making a play for a pipeline technology in north dakota that may help him move oil from that part of the region to refineries. what do you think of what he's doing? >>if warren buffett likes oil then typically his trades are bad at first and then turn into really good trades. if i had a 5 year time frame in some sort of oil play, i would be looking to piggy back warren buffett. that's usually the duration of his trades---about 5 years. if warren likes it it's probably a smart play and might bode well for keystone. >>always good to chat with you mark. mark sebastian of swan wealth advisors, thanks very much. >>thank you. the new year began with more than two million americans signed up for the affordable care act

in that tech bubble basically the s&p tripled in 5 years. k at the lows of 2009 until now, we basically again have tripled in essentially 4 and ½ years but nobody seemed to be worried about that and i think there's a good reason for that. the 1500 level in the s&p that we reached in 2000 was reached too quickly by most accounts given the volatility that we've had over the past 10-12 years. having said that, that's our level. we own that level. the market owes us that level and we got there a few months back. so now that we've gotten there i look at the market as having gone from 1500 to 1850 as opposed to having gone from 600 to 1850. that would be considered a bubble. we were here before. and if you take a chart and you scrunch it all together, essentially we've gone from about 500 in the s&p to about 1840 in about 18 years and that to me doesn't seem to be stretched any longer. >>you mentioned the s&p and i think everybody knows bob iaccino is an index guy. how are you seeing some of the other indexes? >>i think the nasdaq is really going t

the dow tumbled 135 points, the s&p lost 16 points but gold rallied today after tumbling 28% in 2013, the worst annual decline in more than three decades. prices of the precious metal rose $23 an ounce today. crude prices fell ending at a five-week low at $95.44. >>> today may have been an ice patch. the 29% gain for example was 12% greater than the europe 600 index return and stocks that generated 90% of the sales here in the united states, the average gain was a whopping 33%. so will that trend continue in 2014, or should you broaden out globally? seema mody takes a look. >> reporter: they say home is where the heart is, but in 2013, home is where the money was. 1/3rd of all companies that made 90% or more sales in the u.s. beat the s&p 500 thanks to an improving economy and stronger dollar but this year investors may be wise to expand horizons. strategist advice to buy multi-nationals in 2014 because better economic data is likely to come outside the u.s. in the coming year. john says if you're going to take a global approach in investing in 2014, stick with consumer discretionary

down almost 5%, the s&p down 3% on the month. that's because individual stocks are having earnings problems. today, chevron wasn't bad, just no growth, just like exxon yesterday. chevron had earnings, dragging things down. because chevron was down, exxon is down, that's hurting the dow. mastercard had earnings and is dragging visa down. mastercard disappointed, dragging visa and american express down. there is only 30 stocks in the dow. this is a problem when you have weak earnings. there is some bright spots. i will just mention construction, most of the home building stocks are up this month. new orders were up 18%. a little disappointing but i think people were happy enough. again, mostly on the upside. 30 stocks in the dow. that's a problem. >> we are going into a weekend where the emerging markets are in a delicate condition and we have big economic stats in the u.s. next week. perhaps it's understandable. let's go uptown to sheila at the nasdaq. >> i'm going to say we are having a great comeback at the nasdaq. in fact, now

i think it's true for the s&p as well. trading at eight times earnings, you get a little bit more concerned. and the pe of nike, your mid 20s, close to 30. that's pretty heavy for companies that are not growing. >> as we've been saying, the s&p is no longer cheap. probably not expensive. it's fully valued. >> i want to hone in on the idea that perhaps in a session like today people are reaching for safety. in order to do so they're liquidating some of their winners. we have seen some gains. large cap stock is where we're going. easily liquidated, right? is that what you've been noticing, mike, in terms of this rotation? >> i definitely see that. if you're going to hit the sell button, you have to hit where there's a bid. the thinner places aren't the places you're going to go. also, it's because these are the names that have been most active generally. as we rode the stock market up, these were the ones seeing the flurry of activity as well. we shouldn't so surprised when it starts to turn south. i think dan probably more t

liz: why is the s&p target so chinssy? i'm seeing 1845. gher than where we are now? >> it is. the reason for that i think maybe the first half of the year the market can move higher. liz: okay. >> as a result i would be invested but i think there is a correction coming out there somewhere. i've been of the mind set it will be triggered by anticipation of the fed continuing to extract liquidity from the market. i would have thought it would have happened by now. but the fed did a great job when they announced taper of saying look we'll not doing anything well past the 6.5% unemployment rate. so to me that means maybe a correction somewhere around middle of the year as a guess. i think for right now anyway, stocks look good. liz: what is your favorite sector? if stocks look good, i know you liked technology. now today, we got an upgrade on intel because at least one analyst i believe, it was over at jpmorgan said, you know what? don't count out pcs. positive on pcs. intel was moving higher. microsoft. applebee began to move higher. is it hard

the s&p 500 is down and this dispersion between the dow and the s&p 500 has been a theme of this short year. what do you do? do you think that because the components have changed the dow is becoming less reflective of the broader trend? >> well again, in your opening remarks you're saying this is a market searching for a narrative and we're at the first chapter of a long story that's going to unfold throughout the year. that story is going to have a section about janet yellin. a market that's going to have a section about how tapering will or will not transpire. a lot of variables will come about. i think where investors should be poised to look at again, we're seeing a positive growth in earnings the economy is growing modestly, inflation has been checked. the issue is whether it's a revision come this month for december's jobs numbers. so all in all, i think the bias is positive for equities going forward. >> all of those questions, that's what keeps us employed. >> i just -- something has changed. >> absolutely. when the ball dropped on december 31st the sentiment definitely changed

futures closed on the upside after netflix. s here, around 8:30, that's the later in the evening, we drop. that's when the chinese pmi came out showing contraction. that caused a lot of problems in the global markets. you want to watch the dollar/yen here. hedge funds very leveraged now. they use the yen to finance what they want to do here in the united states. the yen started strengthening. this is a two-day chart. that moving down means the yen is strengthening. they have to sell stocks and that's what causes some of the problems. you see the emerging markets here. the etfs associated with them. china, turkey, you see the knock down on them, 3%, 4%, even 5%. also currency problems out there. look at the argentinean stocks. the peso is hitting record low. default westeconcerns over in argentina. some of the big bank stocks. brazilian real is getting hit. capitol flight issues. brazilian stocks are down 3% to 5%. you see a lot of knock on currency effects from the chinese weakness. the sectors here in the united states, what we

we finally found some stability in the s&p after a couple days of weakness. we saw the market actually firm up pretty significantly and with that we also saw the vix under pressure. >>what are your volatility expectations going into this new year? you mentioned the vix. >>right now you'd have to say that the market was able to find its footing. it didn't give up much ground. the s&p was less than 1% below its all time closing high. so you're seeing vol under pressure. in the short term it appears that the volatility expectations continue to be subdued. we saw in 2013, basically an average of 14 for the vix which is historically a very low average. it looks like it's going to play out in the first couple of weeks this year. but if you look at february and beyond i think it tells a different story where you're seeing the futures a little firmer. >>i know you're watching a lot of different sectors as we start this new year. which one is starting the strongest in your mind? >>right now the one thing that i'm keeping a close eye on is the xlf. it looks like the fin
